Job summary

City of Dallas is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer I to inspect and enforce city codes and ordinances. You will review license and permit applications and perform planned inspections to enforce property maintenance standards.

The role requires two years of customer service experience, a valid driver's license, and TDLR certification within probation. Availability for varied shifts and an online exam are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two years of heavy citizen/customer service contact resolving complaints and/or conflicts.
• Must obtain Code Enforcement Officer Trainee certification (TDLR) within probation.
• Valid driver's license with good driving record.
• Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Pass an online exam covering reading comprehension, applying policies, sentence clarity, business correspondence, spelling.

Responsibilities

• Inspect city properties and ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations.
• Identify non-compliant concerns and address issues with appropriate parties.
• Investigate violations and propose corrective actions; communicate with developers.
• Create notices of violation, photograph evidence, issue citations, and respond to inquiries.
• Educate the public on laws, regulations, and code standards.
• Draft and maintain inspection documents; track code enforcement activities.
• Stay up to date on current code standards and maintain certifications.
• Operate city vehicles to perform inspections and address violations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Overview

The Code Enforcement Officer I investigates, inspects, and enforces municipal, land development, and property maintenance codes within city boundaries. Schedules and performs systematic property maintenance inspections to maintain or achieve minimum property standards.

Essential Functions

1. 1 Conducts and performs inspections on city properties, projects, buildings, and developments to ensure compliance with all municipal, state, and federal regulations.
2. 2 Identifies, determines, and compiles non-compliant concerns and addresses issues with appropriate parties; takes accurate data and information concerning code violations and enforces code compliance.
3. 3 Investigates non compliant problems and makes recommendations for corrective action; communicates and collaborates with developers and other individuals to address code violations and make changes; performs follow up work and assistance as needed.
4. 4 Creates accurate and professional notices of violation; takes photographs and gathers evidence while performing inspections; issues citations and responds to citizen complaints.
5. 5 Educates and provides information to citizens, developers, and the general public; interprets laws and regulations while educating public on laws regulations and code standards.
6. 6 Drafts, maintains, and edits documents regarding inspections, code enforcement activities, and code violations;
7. 7 Remains up to date on all current code standards and changes in regulations; maintains certifications and attends professional development as needed.
8. 8 Drives vehicles throughout the city to perform inspections and address compliance and code violations.
9. 9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of heavy citizen/customer service contact resolving complaints and/or conflicts, service and/or billing disputes.

EQUIVALENCY:

A current Code Enforcement Officer Trainee certification (or higher) issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) will meet the education and experience requirements.

LICENSE and CERTIFICATION:

Valid driver's license with good driving record. Must obtain certification as a Code Enforcement Officer Trainee issued by TDLR within probationary period.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

Salary Range

$22.32 - $24.56

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
