Job summary

The Department of Marine Resources in Maine is seeking a scientist to perform scientific data collection and analysis for classifying shellfish harvesting areas along the western coast of Maine in accordance with state and national regulations.

Responsibilities include field sampling by boat and land, data QA/QC, report writing, staff supervision, and coordinating with public and agency partners; there is potential for limited remote work after approval.

Qualifications

• Intermediary education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, engineering field with relevant marine research experience.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• Knowledge of coastal oceanography and environmental pollution issues; strong analytical, database, and computing skills (ACCESS, GIS, R).
• Small boat handling and trailering; strong written and oral communication.

Responsibilities

• Maintain shellfish growing area classifications and water quality data products.
• Operate as primary boat operator for Water Quality program and collect seawater samples across Maine.
• Analyze data and perform QA/QC for water quality datasets.
• Provide staff supervision and field scheduling; assist with report writing.
• Identify pollution sources via shoreline surveys and coordinate with agencies.
• Support remote work opportunities with management approval per policy.
