Job summary

State of Maine’s Department of Marine Resources is seeking a Seafood Technologist to provide technical services to certified shellfish dealers in Scarborough. The role involves advising on seafood safety, public health, and handling procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related field, or four years of relevant experience, plus certification as a USFDA State Shellfish Standardization Inspector.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Bacteriology, or Biology or four years’ experience in food processing including at least two years in quality control or health protection.
  • Certification as a USFDA State Shellfish Standardization Inspector is required prior to attaining permanent status.

Responsibilities

  • Provide field consulting services to certified shellfish dealers on seafood safety and public health.
  • Inspect shellfish dealers according to National Shellfish Sanitation Program requirements.
  • Assist in shellfish illness investigations and collect samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Research processing machines and materials and determine sources of product contamination, recommending corrective action.
