Leonardo DRS is seeking a Co-Op in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering in Fitchburg, MA. Three positions are available for the Spring - Summer semester, January to August 2027, with on-site scheduling (9/80).

Successful candidates will gain hands-on experience in stress, vibration analysis and mechanical design for large power equipment, working with engineers and shop floor personnel to support New Product Development and Continuous Improvement efforts.

Qualifications

  • GPA 2.75 or higher.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Completed coursework or experience with 3D CAD solid modeling & drawing development.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 Standards, tolerancing, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments effectively.
  • Ability to work in a hands-on multidisciplinary team of engineers and manufacturing personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Gain experience in stress, vibration, and shock analysis of large rotating power equipment.
  • Contribute to mechanical design of components and manufacturability of large power equipment.
  • Work with engineers and Shop Floor personnel on NPD and Continuous Improvement changes.
  • Collaborate on process design, tooling development and process documentation for products.

Position Summary

Successful candidates will gain experience in areas such as stress, vibration, and shock analysis of large rotating power equipment and mechanical design of specific components (Mechanical Engineering) and in the mechanical design and manufacturability of large rotating power equipment and specific components (Manufacturing Engineering). This position will involve working with engineers on both military and industrial equipment such as steam turbine generator sets, permanent magnet motors for industrial and ship propulsion applications, and other large power equipment (Mechanical Engineering) and will involve working with engineers and Shop Floor personnel (Manufacturing Engineering). This position will work with the process design, tooling development and process documentation for New Product Development and Continuous Improvement changes.

Three positions (2-Mechanical Engineering & 1-Manufacturing Engineering) are available for the Spring - Summer semester, running from January– August 2027. Dates are flexible to meet academic calendar.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior Mechanical Engineering student, CAD Drafting Design student / Manufacturing Engineering / Operations or related discipline.
  • GPA 2.75 or higher
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Completed coursework or experience with 3D CAD solid modeling & drawing development
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 Standards, tolerancing, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally an in writing
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments effectively
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands‑on multidisciplinary team consisting of engineers and manufacturing personnel.
  • Self-starter and independent working attributes are essential
  • Interest in developing design skills with large power equipment
  • Strong interest in applying mechanical engineering principles to design, analysis, assembly, and testing of large power equipment

The salary range for this position is $45,112-$64,511/year. This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate’s qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for: annual performance-based bonuses, equity awards, and overtime pay (for non-exempt employees as applicable.
