Overview
An established precision manufacturing company is seeking a Swiss CNC Setup Machinist to set up and run complex, close-tolerance jobs on its Swiss-type CNC lathes. This role is critical to maintaining high-quality, precision-turned parts and includes responsibility for first-part approval and mentoring other machine operators.
What you'll do
- Set up jobs as scheduled on CITIZEN, STAR, or TSUGAMI Swiss-type lathes, including guide bushing setup, bar feeder loading, and sub-spindle/live-tool operations
- Follow established manufacturing processes and procedures, working with the programmer to ensure accuracy and completeness of setup and job-related work instructions
- Handle first-piece approval and machine hand-off, as well as training and/or overseeing multiple operators
- Ensure cycle time expectations are met or exceeded
- Make offsets, speed/feed, and rapid edits as needed to improve cycle time, tool life, and quality
- Inspect parts for conformance to quality specifications, holding tight tolerances on small-diameter turned features using micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, optical comparators, microscopes, and other measuring tools
- Operate machines as required between setups, monitoring bar stock, coolant, and tool wear during unattended or lights-out runs
- Follow procedures to address non-conformities
- Document inspection data, outcomes, and results as needed
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment
Required qualifications
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical documents and drawings, including tight-tolerance turned-part prints
- Minimum 2 years Swiss-type CNC setup experience
- Working knowledge of guide bushings, bar feeders, and sub-spindle/live tooling
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task
- Ability to work with little or no supervision
- Mechanical aptitude and good math skills
- Physical ability to safely lift objects up to 50lbs and stand/walk for more than 5 hours per day
- Team player who is self-motivated, open to new ideas, and willing to continually grow professionally
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to identify problems or areas of improvement and relay them to management and co-workers
- Ability to concentrate on repetitive tasks performed in a specific order, noticing any changes
Preferred qualifications
- Experience on CITIZEN, STAR, or TSUGAMI machines preferred
