Job summary

Design and Production Incorporated (D&P) in Lorton, VA, is seeking a skilled CNC Programmer with robust experience in exhibit production environments. You will bridge detailing and manufacturing by developing and optimizing CNC programs for automated routing and cutting machinery to maximize material yield and precision.

The role requires 3–5+ years in CNC machining or programming, proficiency with Mastercam X9 or newer, and knowledge of 3-, 4-, or 5-axis systems.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5+ years of hands‑on CNC machining or programming experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving wood, cabinetry, or exhibit fabrication; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Technical software proficiency with CAD/CAM software, Mastercam X9 or newer, and working knowledge of AutoCAD and Inventor.
  • Machining knowledge of multi‑axis CNC routers, including 3-, 4-, or 5-axis systems, and flat-table nesting equipment.
  • G-code fluency: ability to write, read, and edit G-code on the fly.
  • Attention to detail with precision measurements to meet design tolerances.

Responsibilities

  • Programming & Software Utilization: Write, test, edit, and optimize 2D, 3D, and multi-axis CNC programs, including 4-axis toolpaths, using CAM software such as Mastercam.
  • Blueprint Analysis: Read and interpret complex exhibit shop drawings, 3D models, and GD&T to establish accurate cutting and boring profiles.
  • Material & Tool Selection: Select appropriate cutting tools, router bits, speeds, and feeds based on properties of hardwood, plywood, MDF, acrylic, aluminum, steel, and other sheet goods.
  • Simulation & Testing: Run computer simulations and trial test runs before production to identify programming errors, potential collisions, and risks of tool or machine damage.
  • Machine Setup & Troubleshooting: Perform initial setups and dry runs on the machine controller; diagnose and correct program errors on the Shop floor; edit G-code as needed; improve cycle times and production efficiency.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct regular dimensional checks using calipers, tape measures, and micrometers to ensure completed pieces match exact design tolerances.

We are seeking a highly skilled CNC Programmer with dedicated experience in an exhibit production environment. In this role, you will bridge the gap between Detailing and manufacturing by developing and optimizing CNC programs for our automated routing and cutting machinery. You will ensure the maximum yield of materials, absolute product precision, and optimal machine cycle times while collaborating closely with the Detailing department and Shop floor production teams.

Key Responsibilities

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • G-Code Fluency: The ability to write, read, and edit G-code formulas on the fly.
  • Attention to Detail: Demonstrated precision when reading measurements and verifying components with tape measures and calipers to ensure work meets design tolerances.
