Job summary

Dexter Magnetic Technologies is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist at our Torrance, CA facility to perform machining of production and prototype parts with strict tolerances. Work involves setup and operation of multi-axis lathes and mills, training of level CNC machinists, and writing G&M code under supervisor guidance.

You'll use CMM and precision measuring tools, follow blueprints and GD&T, and participate in 5S and preventive maintenance.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; trade school machining certification preferred.
• 3 years’ experience machining low volume, highly engineered product with minimal scrap, or 1 year with trade cert.
• Basic knowledge of blueprint reading and GD&T.
• Understanding of G&M code programs.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate multi-axis lathes and mills to tight tolerances.
• Train and support level CNC machinists.
• Learn complex setups on multi-axis machines.
• Machine workpieces to timing and runout specifications.
• Create setup kits and sheets to minimize setup time.
• Sharpen tools and rework holders.

• Conduct first piece inspection and document quality data.

Job description

Magnetic Component Engineering (“MCE”), a subsidiary of Dexter Magnetic Technologies (“Dexter”), manufactures permanent magnets and magnetic assemblies made to demanding customer specification in the aerospace / defense, semiconductor equipment, medical, and industrial end markets. Basic Purpose and Objective of the Position

An employee in this position will perform, with minimal guidance, tasks defined by specifications, drawings, work instructions, and direction of supervisor directly related to the machining of both production and prototype parts made of various steel alloys, stainless steel, brass, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, engineering plastics, and magnetic materials.

Major Responsibilities

• Employees will do basic set ups and operate multi-axis lathes and mills and other related equipment holding extremely tight tolerances (+/- 2 microns) to customer drawing and quality specifications and MCE methods. Work is done in a low volume high mix environment.
• Support with training of level l CNC machinist.
• Learn complex set ups on multi-axis lathes and mills.
• Learn to machine workpiece collets to meet timing and true axial runout requirements.
• Learn to create setup kits and sheets to minimize setup time.
• Learn to sharpened cutting tools and rework holders.
• Learn to sharpen tools on cutters and grinders; redressing tools that wear out.
• Use advanced inspection equipment, ex. CMM and digital optical measuring.
• Learn to write G&M (numerical) code programs.
• Conduct 1st piece inspection and provide supporting quality documentation.
• Use various hand tools, precision measuring equipment and associated gages and tooling.
• Conduct preventative maintenance, 5S and housekeeping duties.
• Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as assigned

Hourly Range depending on experience - $30-$35 per hour 15% differential

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent is required. Trade school certification in Machining preferred.
• 3 years’ experience machining low volume, highly engineered product with zero or little scrap, or 1 year experience with a trade school certification in Machining.
• A basic knowledge of blueprint reading and GD&T
• An understanding of G&M code programs

Successful Essential Skills

• Excellent problem-solving skills; uses rigorous logic and methods to solve problems producing effective solutions to problem statements.
• Strong technical skills. Ability to set up and run with minimal guidance a variety of machines while holding very tight tolerances to produce quality parts to spec on short run parts (first part, good part).
• Strong machine shop math and complex blueprint reading skills, including GD&T.
• Knowledge and use of a wide variety of precision measuring equipment.
• Ability to read and comprehend G&M code programs
