Job summary

Magnetic Component Engineering, a part of Dexter Magnetic Technologies, operates a precision machining cell in Torrance, CA. The role involves machining diverse metals and plastics to ±2 microns tolerance, performing setup, and writing G&M code.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school machining preferred.
• 3 years’ experience machining low volume, highly engineered parts or 1 year with Machining trade certification.
• Basic blueprint reading and GD&T knowledge.
• Understanding of G&M code programs and numerical control.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to work with tight tolerances.
• Proficient use of precision measuring equipment; ability to read drawings.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic setups and operate multi-axis lathes and mills to tight tolerances per drawings and MCE methods.
• Assist with training of CNC machinists and learn complex setup procedures.
• Develop setup kits and sheets to minimize setup time; sharpen tools and rework holders as needed.
• Write and review G&M code programs and conduct first-piece and in-process inspections.
• Utilize CMM and digital optical measuring equipment for quality documentation.
• Maintain 5S, housekeeping and support special projects as required.

Magnetic Component Engineering (“MCE”), a subsidiary of Dexter Magnetic Technologies (“Dexter”), manufactures permanent magnets and magnetic assemblies made to demanding customer specification in the aerospace / defense, semiconductor equipment, medical, and industrial end markets. MCE is based in Torrance, CA and operates one 48,000 square foot facility with 95 employees.

Basic Purpose and Objective of the Position

An employee in this position will perform, with minimal guidance, tasks defined by specifications, drawings, work instructions, and direction of supervisor directly related to the machining of both production and prototype parts made of various steel alloys, stainless steel, brass, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, engineering plastics, and magnetic materials.

Major Responsibilities – reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:

• Employees will do basic set ups and operate multi-axis lathes and mills and other related equipment holding extremely tight tolerances (+/- 2 microns) to customer drawing and quality specifications and MCE methods. Work is done in a low volume high mix environment.
• Support with training of level l CNC machinist.
• Learn complex set ups on multi-axis lathes and mills.
• Learn to machine workpiece collets to meet timing and true axial runout requirements.
• Learn to create setup kits and sheets to minimize setup time.
• Learn to sharpened cutting tools and rework holders.
• Learn to sharpen tools on cutters and grinders; redressing tools that wear out.
• Use advanced inspection equipment, ex. CMM and digital optical measuring.
• Learn to write G&M (numerical) code programs.
• Conduct 1 st piece inspection and provide supporting quality documentation.
• Use various hand tools, precision measuring equipment and associated gages and tooling.
• Conduct preventative maintenance, 5S and housekeeping duties.
• Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as assigned

Hourly Range depending on experience - $30-$35 per hour 15% differential

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent is required. Trade school certification in Machining preferred.
• 3 years’ experience machining low volume, highly engineered product with zero or little scrap, or 1 year experience with a trade school certification in Machining.
• A basic knowledge of blueprint reading and GD&T
• An understanding of G&M code programs
• Excellent problem-solving skills; uses rigorous logic and methods to solve problems producing effective solutions to problem statements.
• Strong technical skills. Ability to set up and run with minimal guidance a variety of machines while holding very tight tolerances to produce quality parts to spec on short run parts (first part, good part).
• Strong machine shop math and complex blueprint reading skills, including GD&T.
• Knowledge and use of a wide variety of precision measuring equipment.
• Ability to read and comprehend G&M code programs
