Job summary

Magnetic Component Engineering, a subsidiary of Dexter Magnetic Technologies, seeks a Grinder/Machinist in Torrance, CA. You will grind parts from various alloys to exact specifications, operate ID/OD and surface grinders, and document measurements.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret detailed blueprints and instructions.
  • Operate grinders (ID/OD, surface, centerless) and related equipment.
  • Perform basic inspections and document measurements with tooling.
  • Unload and clean parts from grinders and process outputs.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and housekeeping tasks.
  • Support special projects and other duties as assigned.

Job description

Magnetic Component Engineering (“MCE”), a subsidiary of Dexter Magnetic Technologies (“Dexter”), manufactures permanent magnets and magnetic assemblies made to demanding customer specification in the aerospace / defense, semiconductor equipment, medical, and industrial end markets. MCE is based in Torrance, CA and operates one 48,000 square foot facility with 85 employees.

Basic Purpose and Objective of the Position

This position has overall responsibility for grinding parts of various alloys to the requirements defined by specifications, work instructions and direction of supervisors. An employee in this position will perform tasks directly related to the machining of both production and prototype parts made of various steels, alloys, engineering plastics, and magnetic materials.

Major Responsibilities

  • The work is job oriented, following detailed blueprints, customer specifications, internal work instructions, and engineering direction both written and verbal.
  • Learn to read and understand basic blueprintsLearn to operate grinders, including but not limited to ID/OD grinders, surface grinders, centerless grinders, and other related equipment.
  • Learn basic inspections and document their work using precision measuring equipment and associated gages and tooling.
  • Unload and clean parts from grinders
  • Learn preventative maintenance and housekeeping duties.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.

Hourly Rate - $26 - $28

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required. Trade school certification in Machining or Tool and Die preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year experience machining prototypes, fixtures and gages; grinding experience is helpful.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; use rigorous logic and methods to solve problems producing effective solutions to problem statements.
  • Strong technical skills. Ability to set up and run a variety of machines while holding very tight tolerances with limited direction creating quality parts to spec on short run parts (first part, good part). Primary equipment: CNC OD/ID and surface Grinders as well as rough and precision slicers.
  • Strong machine shop math and complex blueprint reading skills, including GD&T.
  • Knowledge and use of a wide variety of precision measuring equipment.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Works in a clean, temperature-controlled, and well-lit production environment; protective foot and eyewear required.
    • 70% Standing on cement floors with rubber mats, 10% Sitting, 10% Stooping and Bending and 10% Walking
    • Lift and transport an average weight 10 lbs., maximum 30 lbs.
    • Manual dexterity of both hands.
    • Near Visual Acuity (either corrected or uncorrected).
  • Ability to understand verbal direction and instruction. Ability to give feedback to engineers and brainstorm with others on the prototype team. Must be able to read, understand and comply with all quality and safety regulations.
