Job summary

Dover Corp's Belvac division in Lynchburg, VA is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to set up and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machines, turning, milling, boring, threading and facing parts per work instructions.

You will read prints, determine speeds and feeds, and monitor tolerances to +/-0.0003 inch, ensuring part quality and productivity from first piece to last. This role requires hands-on expertise with multiple CNC platforms and a focus on efficiency and precision.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of how to set cutting speeds, feeds and depths of cut.
• Ability to read prints and understand tolerance requirements.
• Experience operating multiple CNC machines in a production environment.

Responsibilities

• Selects cutting speeds, feeds, and depth of cut per machining instructions.
• Works to tolerances as close as +/- 0.0003 inch.
• Reads prints and studies the sequence of operation and setup requirements.
• Lays out reference lines and machining locations on parts using layout tools.
• Sharpen tools on a bench grinder.
• Operates CNC equipment and ensures machine programs run correctly.
• Runs at least 3 functionally different CNC pieces (lathe, mill, grinder).

General Function

Set up and operate numerically controlled machines to perform series of machining operations, such as turning, milling, boring, threading and facing on parts according to work instructions and procedures to assure Belvac's quality of work is upheld.

Physical Requirements

• Requires long periods of standing (up to 10 hours/day)
• Must be able to operate overhead cranes
• Although all production areas have overhead cranes, on occasion Manufacturing, Stockroom and Assembly employees may choose to lift items by hand for convenience. It is the responsibility of all employees to follow correct lifting techniques and seek help or utilize mechanical lifting aids as appropriate to avoid potential injury.
• Requires good eye, hand coordination
• Requires use of hand tools, files, sanders and grinders

Primary Responsibilities

• Selects and sets cutting speeds; feed rates, depth of cut and cutting tool according to machining instructions or knowledge of metal properties
• Works to tolerances as close as +/- 0.0003 inch
• May work only from print
• Studies prints, sequence of operation and set-up requirements
• May lay out reference lines and machining locations on part, according to print, using layout tools, such as rule, divider and scriber, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques
• May sharpen tools on bench grinder
• Turns dials and switches to override control and correct machine performance, applying practical knowledge of lathe operation.
• Ability to run 5 Axis CNC Mills.
• Studies dispatch sheet and organizes materials for next run during automatic CNC-controlled cycles to shorten changeover time
• Use of indexes, boring heads, rotary tables
• Proficient in programming knowledge.
• Operator must run at least 3 functionally different pieces of CNC equipment, i.e. CNC lathe/CNC horiz. mill/ CNC vert.mill /CNC grinder
