Responsibilities
  • CNC machine operators set up CNC machinery for production runs. They ensure the machine has the proper computer program and necessary tools installed. They position the materials being used on the machine and monitor machinery for any problems during the production run. If there is an issue, operators may adjust the program to correct the problem or consult with a programmer. After items have been produced, CNC machine operators ensure that they meet specifications and verify their quality.
  • Perform various and routine fabrication on CNC mill, CNC punch, and manual mills.
  • Setting up CNC machines for production runs, including setting up vises/fixtures, cutting tools and offsets.
  • Build complex parts to comply with drawing specifications and interpret drawings to meet tight tolerances.
  • Edit and troubleshoot CNC machine code to produce complex parts to engineering drawings, specifications, tolerance, and program software.
  • Maintain high ethical standards for self and others and verify quality of components throughout the machining process (first parts, in-process inspections).
  • Maintain part specifications by observing drilling, threading, facing and milling operations; take measurements, detect malfunctions, troubleshoot, replace worn tools, and make machine adjustments as necessary.
  • Perform sawing, washing, and deburring of parts as needed.
  • Aid in cutting fixturing, shop aids, new print revisions, and new parts never before produced.
  • Document actions by completing production and quality logs; maintain continuity across shifts by documenting actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment and adhere to safety procedures; ensure others in the machine shop also adhere to safety protocols.
  • Attend regularly and on time; flexibility to work different shifts if needed to meet production deadlines.
  • Develop working knowledge of tool holders, tools, boring bars, and inserts used on CNC machines; participate in training opportunities to update job knowledge.
  • Maintain acceptable reject and scrap rates and production rates; mount, align and secure machine tooling, attachments, and workpieces; install cutting tools in the machine spindle.
  • Load control media in the machine controller or enter commands to retrieve pre-programmed instructions from the database; set machine controls to position the spindle relative to the workpiece and regulate cutting depth, speed, feed, and coolant flow.
  • Start the machine, monitor displays and operations to detect malfunctions; stop the machine for tool changes and ensure parts meet blueprint specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Maintain proper maintenance of machines, equipment, and facilities; identify and correct problems with some assistance.
  • Keep the Machine Shop area clean and orderly, sustaining 5S in the department; understand and comply with all safety rules and company policies.
