Job description

Job Title: CNC Machinist Job Description

This role focuses on setting up and operating CNC mills and CNC lathes to machine large weldments and structural steel components in a heavy industrial machine shop. You will use overhead cranes to safely maneuver and position large parts, interpret blueprints and GD&T, and apply precision measuring tools to ensure all parts meet exact customer specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Set up CNC mills and CNC lathes for production, including tooling, fixturing, and program verification.
  • Operate CNC mills and CNC lathes to machine large weldments, structural steel, and other large parts to precise dimensions.
  • Use overhead cranes and related equipment to safely maneuver, lift, and position heavy components and assemblies.
  • Read and interpret machine shop blueprints to understand part geometry, tolerances, and machining requirements.
  • Apply GD&T principles when interpreting drawings to ensure parts are machined to specified form, fit, and function.
  • Use precision measuring tools, such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges, to inspect parts and verify they meet customer specifications.
  • Monitor machining operations, make necessary adjustments, and troubleshoot issues to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in a heavy industrial machine shop environment.
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize machining processes and support continuous improvement efforts.
Essential Skills
  • At least 3 years of experience in setup of CNC mills or CNC lathes in a machine shop environment.
  • Proficiency in CNC setup, including tooling selection, workholding, and machine offsets for mills and lathes.
  • Hands‑on experience operating CNC mills and CNC lathes for production machining.
  • Ability to read and interpret machine shop blueprints accurately.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and its application in machining.
  • Skill in using precision measuring tools to inspect and verify part dimensions.
  • Capability to operate overhead cranes safely to move and position large parts.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to meeting tight tolerances and customer specifications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience machining large weldments and structural steel components.
  • Background working in a heavy industrial or large-part machining environment.
  • Comfort working with very large CNC mills and lathes and complex setups.

Work Environment

This position is on the second shift, working Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The role is based in a heavy industrial machine shop equipped with very large CNC mills and lathes, housed in a spacious and modern manufacturing complex. The facility is clean and organized for a metals shop, with a strong emphasis on safety, proper use of overhead cranes, and efficient workflow around large‑part machining.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Clackamas, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $42.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
