**Description**

Responsible for safely setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Accountable for the Safety, Housekeeping, Quality, Throughput, and On-Time-Delivery of production work assigned, in coordination within and between departments or shifts. Develops and maintains proper organization and levels of tooling inventories.

  • Ensures the safety of themselves, transients, and visitors; understands how machines work and how to operate them safely; knowledge of emergency stops and personal protective equipment in each work area.
  • Calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
  • Machines parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling shapers, or grinders.
  • Measures, examines, and tests completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates all basic and specialized machine tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Aligns and secures fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials onto machines.
  • Monitors the feed and speed of machines during machining.
  • Studies samples, blueprints, drawings, and engineering info to determine methods and dimensions.
  • Selects appropriate tools, machines, and materials for machinery work.
  • Prepares and marks metal stock for cuts.
  • Diagnoses machine malfunctions and determines need for repairs.
  • Maintains industrial machines using knowledge of mechanics and machining procedures.
  • Supports teamwork and promotes harmony among workers and shifts.
  • Supports ISO 9001 policies and continuous improvement activities.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area.
  • Program CNC machines to ensure proper functioning and specifications.
  • Supports metalworking projects from planning to testing.
  • Designs fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet engineering needs.
  • Prepares sketches for product appearance.
  • Provides guidance in ISO9000 activities.

**Requirements**

  • Minimum of 5 years machining experience preferred.
  • CNC programming experience required.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and maneuver 200 lbs.
  • Blueprint reading skills.
  • Strong safety, housekeeping, and quality attributes.
  • Practical knowledge of the metric system and Lean Manufacturing Techniques.
  • Ability to complete Inspection Data Records.

**Education & Experience**

High school diploma or GED plus five years related experience or equivalent.

**Certificates & Licenses**

  • Machinist certification preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License preferred.
  • Ability to obtain forklift and crane certifications within 90 days.

**Physical Demands**

Regularly sit, stand, walk; occasionally stoop, kneel, climb; use hands and arms; identify colors; remember instructions.

**Work Environment**

Exposure to moving parts, airborne particles, fumes, vibration, noise, high temperatures, and confined spaces.
