The role reports to the Shop Manager and requires high precision and teamwork in a fast-paced shop. Ideal candidates have 10+ years’ CNC machining experience, especially with 5-axis milling, and can read fabrication drawings, apply customer specs, and ensure quality while meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Read fabrication drawings and set up CNC program, designate tools, select cutting speeds.
  • Read and apply customer specifications to ensure engineering requirements are met.
  • Perform complex programming, setup and operation of CNC machines.
  • Maintain machines and troubleshoot issues to sustain performance.
  • Inspect parts for defects per standards and client specs.
  • Coordinate with Shop Manager and production team to manage workloads.

Job description

Job summary:

The CNC Machinist is responsible for operating and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce high-quality metal parts and pieces. The CNC Machinist should be able to perform complex programming during production, set up equipment, maintain equipment, and troubleshooting of the machine. The CNC Machinist will report directly to the Shop Manager.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Read fabrication drawings and interprets drawing instructions to set up computer program, designate proper cutting tools, and select accurate cutting speeds per project
  • Read, interpret and apply customer specifications ensuring engineering principles and requirements are met
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Perform complex programming, set up and operation of CNC machines for performance efficiency
  • Use appropriate cutting tools and materials to produce high-quality parts while reducing product waste
  • Must closely monitor machines, tool vibrations, and product cuts while in production
  • Properly set cutting speeds and utilizing correct programs when cutting and finishing products
  • Visually inspects parts for defects according to inspection standards and client specifications
  • Efficiently works multiple jobs, prioritizes each according to production deadlines, and transitions from one job to another based on production demands or direction from the shop manager
  • Organizes and maintains a count of plate material by job to ensure enough plate material is on site and available for upcoming jobs
  • Provide identification of completed materials according to cut stages and job number to help production team organize and transfer product movement and use
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Skills/Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma
  • 10+ years’ experience in CNC machining
  • Solid experience with 5-Axis milling machines strongly preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and check dimensions
  • Ability to use a measuring tape and accurately measure material dimensions according to fabrication drawings and program settings
  • Works with precision measuring instruments, calculators, computers, and other electronic equipment efficiently
  • Safety focused
  • Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail
  • Sensitive to deadlines, ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work as a team and working towards accomplishing tasks as a team

Physical Requirements and other items to communicate:

The ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work in a high-pace manufacturing environment. Have the ability to multi-task by sharing workspace with interruption from others. Overtime may be required to meet tight deadlines.
