Job summary

Fives Machining Systems, Inc. in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin is seeking a Gantry Mill Operator to join our precision machining team.

You will set up, adjust, and operate a Gantry Mill to perform complex machining operations with very close tolerances, reading blueprints and using metrology tools. The role requires ability to read program data, fixture setup, and methodically verify alignment, while maintaining a safe work environment.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school, or 4–6 years related experience and/or training.
• Ability to read blueprints (Metric & English)
• Ability to setup tooling and read program data for tooling and fixtures.
• Ability to work with very precise tolerances and measurement tools.

Responsibilities

• Set up, adjust, and operate the Gantry Mill to perform a complex series of machining operations with close tolerances.
• Maintain a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
• Use program data and setup instructions to define tools, fixtures, and machine settings.
• Locate, mount, align, secure, and clamp workpieces; calibrate fixtures to reference points.
• Operate from drawings and specifications using measurement tools to verify setup and results.
• Diagnose machining issues, adjust tooling and machine offsets as needed.
• Work with programming staff to correct any errors in setup or operation.
• Keep work area clean and orderly; perform other related duties as directed.

We are currently seeking a Gantry Mill Operator, who has the same desire to prove that industry can do it!

At Fives we all have a part to play in achieving our common purpose. Your role will be to:

• Set up, adjust, and operate the Gantry Mill to perform a complex series of machining operations. Work to very close tolerances and finish specifications.
• Proactively attain a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
• Work from program data and setup instructions defining tools, fixtures and material clamping methods, machine calibrations and control settings.
• Locate, mount, align, secure, support and clamp workpiece; set stops and calibrate fixture or workpiece to material reference points.
• Position and remove work by means of bridge crane or electric hoists.
• Install programs and correlate machine position with control; manually cycle machine through operation sequence to check work alignment, tooling sequences, clearances, speeds, feeds, etc., and adjust machine to correct.
• Recognize and report errors in programming and operations, and work with programming personnel to correct errors
• Diagnose operating difficulties and make appropriate adjustments to realign machine, change tooling, etc., to correct operations or dimensional deviations.
• Work from drawings, specifications, programming setup instructions and data. Use micrometers, scale, protractor, bore gages, Vernier’s, surface gauges, indicators, etc., to make setups and check work.
• Proceed with a minimum of supervision. Operator must be alert to operations. Detect any unusual conditions, defective material or machine malfunctions and report to supervision.
• Maintain work area in a clean, productive and orderly manners
• Perform other related duties as directed.

Requirements

• Must be dependable, honest & maintain a positive attitude
• Must be able to maintain a clean & organized work area
• Must be able to operate a computer (i.e. Windows)
• Must be able to perform shop math skills (i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, charts, tables, algebra, trigonometry)
• Ability to read blueprints (Metric & English)
• Ability to setup tooling
• Ability to learn how to read, write & edit part programs (G & M-codes)
• Ability to edit work & tooling offsets
• Ability to work with very precise tolerances
• Ability to use inspection equipment (i.e. tape measure, rule, gauge blocks, OD & ID micrometers, depth micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges)
• Ability to use material moving equipment (i.e. forklift, motorized-hand cart)
• Ability to problem solve and work on continuous improvements as needed
• Ability to setup own part fixturing
• Knowledge of multi-axis (3+2 positional) machining
• Knowledge of cutting feeds & speeds
• Knowledge of probing
• Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
• Knowledge of cutting inserts
