To teach CNA classes in California, you need an active California RN or LVN license, at least two years of nursing experience (including one year in direct patient care in a long-term care or similar setting), and approval from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). You also need a state-approved curriculum, and you may need to complete at least 24 hours of continuing education in planning and evaluating educational programs unless you have a nursing teaching credential.

License and Experience

• License: You must hold a current and unencumbered California Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license.
• Experience: You need at least two years of nursing experience as an RN or LVN, with at least one of those years involving direct patient care in a long-term care setting, such as a skilled nursing facility, intermediate care facility, home care, or hospice.
