Job summary

City of Chesapeake is seeking qualified professionals to provide mental health services within the community. A bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is needed for some programs.

Job description

Required Qualifications

• Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires a bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field or other degree as approved by the Virginia Department of Health Professions. A master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Rehabilitation is required for some assigned programs.
• Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
• Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Requires a Qualified Mental Health Professional ( QMHP ) or Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional ( QIDP ) certification and highest Part C standards within 6 months of hire; CPR , First Aid and medication administration certifications within 3 months of hire, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor ( CSAC ) certification upon hire, Case Management Modules and Intellectual Disabilities Workbook completed within thirty days of hire, Part C Early Intervention Certification within six months of hire, and/or Pre-Screening Certification within 6 weeks of hire (12 weeks for part-time staff).
• Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong communication skills and knowledge of a wide variety of mental health community resources.
• A minimum of 3 years experience delivering services in the Mental Health field. ie: social work, counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, or case management.
