Job summary

Yale Cancer Center in New Haven is seeking a skilled Cytology Lab Technician to join the team on the 4PM–12AM shift. You will assist in daily preparation of gynecological specimens, accessioning, registration, triage, and transport, while supporting the patient registration team and ensuring HIPAA and safety compliance.

The role includes performing specialized laboratory tests, quality control, slide staining and coverslipping, and cross-coverage in Histology, IHC, and grossing.

Qualifications

  • Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family, and high school level education.
  • Or four years of related work experience and an Associate’s degree.
  • Or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specialized laboratory tests and procedures in areas such as histology, cytology, cytogenics, medical technology, and histocompatibility.
  • Tests for quality control of slides, specimens and cultures; operates and maintains equipment.
  • Oversees and instructs support staff; serves as a source of information on techniques and equipment operation.
  • Prepares specimens and tissue for analysis using specialized laboratory techniques.
  • Stains and mounts slides; prepares solutions and media; cultures tissues.
  • Develops and updates laboratory techniques; orders and maintains inventory.

Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Cytology Manager and evening Supervisor, assist in daily preparation of gynecological specimens; support patient registration team in all activities, including but not limited to: accessioning, registration, triage, transport of specimens, filing (slides, blocks, documents, etc).

Schedule Full-time, 37.5 hrs., 4PM-12AM, Holidays and recess period required may be required in rotation.

Essential Duties
  • Case intake of specimens/ triage (includes use of EPIC/Beaker and Tubetracker programs)
  • Accession gyn specimens and ancillary testing added to them using Copath.
  • Call in any problem cases to clients as well as communication with pathology attendings/residents when needed.
  • Performs specialized laboratory tests and procedures in the cytology molecular division, records results, interprets and analyzes results of molecular tests and procedures.
  • Send back any problem cases to clients needed
  • Look up any issues in EPIC/ print off paperwork needed in EPIC
  • Prepare samples for molecular testing using pipetting techniques
  • Label and coverslip slides, both manually and with use of the slide stainer and coverslip instrument.
  • Use of Histology Asset Tracking System (HAT)
  • Filing slides
  • Follows all HIPAA privacy regulations at all times
  • Comply with Safety protocols at all times
  • Perform additional duties incidental to laboratory function.
  • Provide coverage in Histology, IHC and grossing.
  • Provide cross-coverage and support in other laboratory areas as operational needs require, with appropriate training provided.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • 1. Ability to multitask and problem solve.
  • 2. Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. Experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • 3. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff.
  • 4. Demonstrated understanding of molecular testing.
  • 5. Demonstrated understanding in grossing surgical specimens for histology.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • 1. A Bachelor of Science with at least 26 credit hours in Biology or Chemistry.
  • 2. Experience with CoPath and EPIC.
Principal Responsibilities
  • 1. Performs specialized laboratory tests and procedures in such areas as histology, cytology, cytogenics, medical technology, and histocompatibility. Records results. Interprets and analyzes results of test and procedures.
  • 2. Tests for and ensures quality control of slides, specimens and cultures. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • 3. Oversees and instructs support staff. Serves as a source of information on specialized laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
  • 4. Prepares specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples, and other matter for analysis and diagnosis using specialized laboratory techniques.
  • 5. Stains and mounts slides, prepares specialized solutions and media; and cultures tissues.
  • 6. Develops and modifies laboratory techniques and procedures. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May photograph specimens and other matter and develop film.
  • 7. Performs additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.

Required Education and Experience Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree, or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
