The Clinical Sleep Health Educator works under the direct supervision of Sleep Lab Leadership and the Sleep Program Medical Director to provide comprehensive education and support related to the evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This includes in-center and home-based diagnostic sleep testing, therapeutic interventions, patient care coordination, compliance management, outcome assessment, and identifying and addressing barriers to care.

The Clinical Sleep Health Educator is credentialed in Sleep Technology or another allied health profession with appropriate training in sleep-related patient management. This role requires professional collaboration with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Educates patients and families on sleep disorders, related comorbidities, therapy options, equipment use, sleep hygiene, and self-care strategies.
  • Supports and empowers patients, families, and caregivers to take an active role in managing sleep health.
  • Designs and delivers sleep health education and promotion programs with broad impact across the campus and/or community.
  • Develops and implements new or revised education programs, making significant decisions that align with institutional goals.
  • Engages in internal and external collaborations related to campus and program objectives.

This role requires wide-ranging experience and a deep understanding of professional standards, program development, and patient engagement strategies in sleep health care.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist and must maintain RPSG.T. certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis CPR certification
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in sleep technology and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technologist and clinical sleep health educator
  • Allied health professional with appropriate training and competence in patient education and sleep medicine or international equivalents, including post-secondary education or certification
  • Expert and comprehensive knowledge of the medical field, health promotion, and/or related education programs
  • Expert skills associated with the development and delivery of complex health education programs
  • Advanced written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Expert skills associated with identifying organizational needs, program development, and implementation
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and respond to client needs through the development, implementation, and delivery of comprehensive health-related programs
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Competency with Practice Parameters and Clinical Guidelines for sleep medicine health care
  • Understand sleep architecture and identify factors contributing to normal sleep variances related to aging, gender, and medication
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the pathophysiology of sleep disorders and associated comorbidities
  • Reference current national clinical sleep practice parameters and clinical practice guidelines to develop appropriate diagnosis and treatment plans
  • Maintain proficiency in the domains of practice in sleep medicine and technology
  • Demonstrate proficient use of medical terminology
  • Monitor clinical, quality, patient satisfaction, and other key regulatory metrics
  • Evaluation and Management of Patient Education and Compliance
  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information
  • Competent with specific clinical assessments using standardized diagnostic tools (e.g., Epworth Sleepiness Scale, STOP-BANG, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index)
  • Provide all aspects of instruction in caring for patients with sleep disorders
  • Must have the ability to obtain information regarding patient needs, a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients
  • Monitor patient adherence to prescribed treatment
  • Coordinate in center and home sleep apnea diagnostic testing and therapeutic modalities
  • Implement and follow up on physician orders
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with the patient’s healthcare team regarding new or continued symptoms, treatment concerns, or management of optimal care
  • Develop programs and provide education to assist patients with treatment acclimation and compliance, and track health improvement indicators
  • Discuss equipment/supply replacement schedule
  • Comprehensive Understanding of Teaching and Motivational Skills
  • Apply principles of motivational teaching to facilitate patient self-management
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide age-appropriate patient education
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide appropriate healthcare literacy assessment and teaching based on healthcare literacy level
  • Provide patient education for sleep disorders, comorbidities, therapeutic equipment and processes, therapy options, sleep hygiene, and self-help
  • Empower patients, families, and caregivers to assume as much responsibility for their care as possible
  • Address tangible barriers to care and refer the patient to the appropriate contact for assistance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Clinical Sleep Health (CCSH)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Master's degree in a health-related field or equivalent education and experience
  • Nationally recognized certification as a Health and Wellness Coach
  • Familiarity with the UC Davis Health and campus as well as the Sacramento and Davis communities
  • Background in an Occupational Health Clinic environment

Key Responsibilities

  • 70% - Execution of daily operations for the Sleep Education program
