Job Description

The Simulation Specialist leads the development, facilitation, evaluation, and operational delivery of high-quality simulation-based education and skills training that support safe, evidence-based clinical practice across the organization. The role serves as the primary operational and educational resource for the simulation laboratory, partnering with nursing, physician practices, clinical leaders, and interdisciplinary stakeholders to deliver onboarding, nurse residency, resuscitation certification, and continuing education programs. The Simulation Specialist aligns simulation activities with organizational strategic priorities, regulatory and accreditation expectations, and recognized healthcare simulation best-practice standards. This position also ensures reliable simulation-center operations through effective scheduling, equipment and supply stewardship, setup and breakdown, and utilization tracking.

Responsibilities

Lead simulation-based education.

Design, develop, facilitate, and evaluate simulation-based learning experiences that address organizational priorities, clinical competency needs, patient safety risks, evidence-based practice changes, and identified performance gaps. Conduct effective prebriefing, scenario facilitation, debriefing, feedback, and learner evaluation using psychologically safe, learner-centered methods.

Develop simulation curriculum and scenarios.

Collaborate with Professional Development Specialists, clinical educators, subject-matter experts, nurse leaders, physician-practice representatives, and interdisciplinary partners to create, revise, and validate simulation scenarios, skills activities, task-trainer experiences, and supporting materials. Align objectives, assessment methods, and outcomes with role-specific competencies, policies, clinical standards, and program goal

Support organizational education programs.

Plan and deliver simulation and skills-training support for employee onboarding, nurse residency courses, staff development, competency validation, physician-practice education, and other assigned learning initiatives. Provide individual or group coaching, remediation, and deliberate practice as appropriate.

Manage daily simulation operations.

Serve as the primary resource for simulation-laboratory readiness and workflow. Coordinate scheduling and room/resource allocation; prepare, stage, program, and reset simulators, task trainers, standardized-patient materials, audiovisual/debriefing equipment, clinical equipment, and supplies; and complete timely setup, breakdown, cleaning, and storage for simulation and skills activities.

Coordinate AHA and resuscitation education.

Support implementation and delivery of American Heart Association (AHA) certification and renewal programs, including BLS, ACLS, and/or other assigned resuscitation courses. Maintain course materials, equipment readiness, learner documentation, and instructor/course processes in accordance with applicable AHA requirements and organizational policy.

Maintain simulation equipment, supplies, and technology.

Monitor inventory and par levels; maintain supply organization and scenario-specific materials; conduct routine equipment checks; troubleshoot operational issues; coordinate repairs, preventive maintenance, vendor support, and replacement recommendations; and ensure safe, appropriate use of simulation resource

Evaluate quality, outcomes, and utilization.

Maintain accurate records of simulation events, learner participation, equipment status, supply use, scheduling, and lab utilization. Collect and analyze feedback and outcome data; identify improvement opportunities; and report trends, metrics, and recommendations to leadership and stakeholders.

Advance standards, accreditation readiness, and strategic alignment.

Implement recognized healthcare simulation best-practice standards and support documentation, policies, procedures, and continuous-improvement activities that demonstrate alignment with accreditation, regulatory, organizational, and program expectations. Participate in committees, workgroups, quality-improvement efforts, and strategic planning relevant to simulation and clinical education.

Collaborate and provide consultation.

Educate and coach faculty, preceptors, instructors, and staff in simulation principles, equipment use, facilitation, and debriefing practices. Foster productive partnerships across departments and contribute to an inclusive, respectful learning environment. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required. MSN with education focus, or MEd preferred.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

Required

• Minimum of five years of clinical nursing, healthcare education, simulation, or closely related healthcare experience.
• Minimum of one year of experience facilitating simulation-based education, clinical skills training, competency assessment, or structured adult learning; comparable experience may be considered

Preferred

• Three or more years of progressive experience in healthcare simulation, nursing professional development, clinical education, or program coordination.
• Experience supporting nurse residency, onboarding, resuscitation education, or multispecialty clinical education programs.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge of adult-learning principles, clinical education design, competency assessment, deliberate practice, and feedback.
• Ability to design and deliver simulation-based educational experiences using high-, medium-, and low-fidelity simulation; task trainers; standardized patients; and skills-lab modalities.
• Working knowledge of recognized healthcare simulation standards of best practice, including ethics, professional integrity, prebriefing, facilitation, debriefing, evaluation, operations, and quality improvement.
• Ability to translate evidence-based practice, clinical policies, patient-safety priorities, and performance-improvement needs into measurable learning objectives and educational activities.
• Knowledge of clinical workflows, emergency response/resuscitation processes, and common nursing competencies appropriate to the organization's patient populations and service lines.
• Ability to operate, program, troubleshoot, and maintain simulation manikins, task trainers, audiovisual capture/debriefing systems, computers, and related clinical equipment; ability to learn new technology quickly.
• Strong project-management, scheduling, organization, inventory-management, documentation, data-tracking, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with learners, faculty, clinical leaders, physicians, staff, vendors, and interdisciplinary partners.
• Ability to maintain learner confidentiality and a psychologically safe environment; use sound judgment when handling sensitive performance and education data.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, learning-management systems, scheduling tools, and data-reporting tools.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

Registered Nurse (current, unrestricted license in Ohio or MultiState License) required. Certification in area of specialty (CHSE/CHSOS) and/or certification in Nursing Professional Development (through National League for Nursing [NLN] or American Nurses Credential Center [ANCC]) required within three years.
