Job description

Description

The Clinical Research Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) is a registered professional nurse responsible for serving as a liaison between Northwestern University (NU) clinical research investigator teams (e.g., investigator-initiated trials, sponsor trials) and Northwestern Medical Group (NMG). The CRN demonstrates exemplary clinical research knowledge, strong communication skills, and collaborates with the inter-professional team to ensure proper implementation and conduct of clinical research studies throughout the protocol lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitates and coordinates the logistical aspects of assigned study protocols with research staff, ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice, SOPs, nursing practices, and sponsor requirements.
  2. Provides direct patient care, including inpatient admission, diagnosis, medication administration, clinical tests, and ongoing assessment under the supervision of the PI or physician.
  3. Contributes to protocol implementation, addressing system issues and process improvements, and presents updates at weekly meetings; monitors research study budgets.
  4. Attends investigator meetings, pre-study visits, study initiation, and other related visits by monitors or sponsors.
  5. Coordinates procedures and visits with external vendors as needed.
  6. Leads in-house protocol meetings to review procedures, staffing, and visit flow.
  7. Schedules and manages medical coverage for protocol procedures.
  8. Maintains communication records with PIs, study subjects, sponsors, and IRB.
  9. Serves as the primary contact for study participants, providing instructions and handling questions or concerns.
  10. Ensures completion of protocol procedures and accurate documentation of adverse events.
  11. Verifies source documents and ensures data accuracy and timeliness in CRFs.
  12. Prepares for and supports study visits, providing onsite assistance.
  13. Manages document retention, security, and destruction.
  14. Completes required training and trains other research staff as needed.
  15. Maintains research files, designs data collection forms, and assists with IRB submissions.
  16. Travels between research locations as required.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Registered Nurse license.
  • Minimum two years of clinical research management experience with knowledge of protocol requirements and GCP.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Nursing.
  • Three to five years of clinical research experience.
  • Certification by ACRP or SoCRA.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations, with OCN certification within 6 months if not already certified.
