Job Description
The Clinical Research Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards.

The CRN is a registered nurse responsible for serving as a liaison between Northwestern University (NU) clinical research investigator teams and Northwestern Medical Group (NMG). The CRN collaborates with the inter-professional team to ensure proper implementation and conduct of clinical research studies throughout the study lifecycle.

Responsibilities:
  1. Facilitates and coordinates logistical aspects of study protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practice, SOPs, nursing practices, and sponsor requirements.
  2. Provides direct patient care, including inpatient admission, diagnosis, medication administration, and clinical tests, under the supervision of the principal investigator or physician.
  3. Contributes to protocol implementation, attends meetings, monitors budgets, and ensures process efficiency across NMH.
  4. Participates in investigator meetings, pre-study visits, and study initiation visits, coordinating with monitors and sponsors.
  5. Arranges procedures and visits with external vendors as needed.
  6. Leads in-house protocol meetings to review procedures, staffing, and visit flow.
  7. Coordinates medical needs and coverage for protocol procedures.
  8. Maintains documentation of communication with investigators, study subjects, sponsors, and IRB.
  9. Serves as the primary contact for study subjects, providing instructions and handling questions or concerns.
  10. Ensures completion of protocol procedures, documents adverse events, and reports them per protocol and regulations.
  11. Maintains quality and completeness of source documents and ensures accurate data entry into CRFs.
  12. Prepares for and assists during study visits, ensuring availability for corrections and questions.
  13. Supervises document retention, security, and destruction as applicable.
  14. Completes required training, including protocol-specific and organizational policies.
  15. Trains other staff on data collection and reporting, maintains research files, and assists with IRB submissions.
  16. Travels between research locations as needed.
  17. Performs other related functions as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Registered Nurse license.
  • At least two years managing clinical research trials with knowledge of protocols and GCP.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Nursing.
  • 3-5 years in clinical research trials.
  • Certification by ACRP or SoCRA.
  • Involvement in professional organizations and OCN certification within 6 months if not already certified.
