Responsibilities

• Verifies positive patient identification and assesses reactions to specimen procurement.
• Performs venipuncture and collects specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
• Obtains specimens according to priority and schedules draw times and labels specimens correctly.
• Performs limited testing under CLIA according to established policies.
• Answers and screens telephone calls. Assists with inventory and supports billing and other functions.
• Receives, sorts, packages, and tracks specimens for transport and processing.
• Orders and verifies test requests and performs quality control checks.
• Performs laboratory result entry and participates in proficiency testing and reporting.
• Instructs employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry and specimen processing.
• Provides age-appropriate patient care knowledge as part of the department's standards.
