Responsibilities
Responsible for securing patient data based on comprehensive data elements, financial education/counseling, insurance verification, and providing clinical information for pre-certification, authorization, and third-party claims management. The role involves interviewing patients for clinical, financial, and history information, arranging appropriate clinical care, and working independently to gather and submit patient information under pharmacist oversight. The technician will perform pharmacy-related functions in compliance with departmental policies to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One of the following:
- One (1) year of pharmacy technician or healthcare-related experience AND
- Be nationally certified (PTCB or EXCPT) OR registered with the state Board of Pharmacy upon hire (except PA).
- OR
- Three (3) years of pharmacy technician or healthcare-related experience, with certification within 15 months of hire and registration with the state Board of Pharmacy within 15 months (except PA).
- Additional Requirements: Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree, post-high school education in a science field, or graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities and may not be all-inclusive:
- Draft correspondence letters and send to referral sources as needed.
- Gather and document patient demographics, insurance information, needs assessment, and patient history.
- Initiate refill/follow-up calls and schedule deliveries.
- Provide information and answer questions from patients or caregivers, referring to clinicians when appropriate.
- Identify patients requiring pre-certification or pre-authorization and contact insurance companies for eligibility and benefits.
- Maintain patient records accurately and timely.
- Assist pharmacists with filling and labeling prescriptions.
- Calculate measurements for compounds and maintain logs.
- Provide medication guides with prescriptions.
- Ensure proper storage of medications.
- Communicate effectively with patients of all ages based on established standards.
- Collaborate with team to develop and meet quarterly objectives.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient and operational information.
- Report workflow problems to management promptly.
- Assist in training pharmacy technicians.
- Calculate anticipated charges, including self-pay portions.
Physical and Work Environment
- Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods.
- Lift up to 30 pounds and push up to 50 pounds.
- Handle dexterity tasks such as handling and reaching.

Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in computer use and software applications.
- Knowledge of drugs, dosing, side effects, and administration preferred.
- Understanding of pharmaceutical rules, policies, and regulations preferred.

- Flexibility to adapt to department needs and changes.
- Effective verbal and written communication, with a focus on customer service.
