Job summary

Fairview Health Services' Southdale Infusion Center seeks a student pharmacist intern to provide clinical care to infusion patients and assist the pharmacy manager with operations.

You will support pharmacists, supervise support staff indirectly, and ensure adherence to policies while advancing from operational duties in Year 1 to full clinical responsibilities and interdisciplinary collaboration by Year 4.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
• Year-specific progression required for Years 2–4.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient counseling and prospective drug use evaluation for oral chemotherapy.
• Perform patient evaluations related to prescribed therapies; collect, analyze, and interpret data.
• Monitor patient records for allergies, drug interactions, and therapy appropriateness.
• Dispense medications accurately and in compliance with legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
• Identify and resolve patient-specific medication-related problems.
• Support medication safety and error management activities.
• Ensure accurate billing to payers.
• Utilize pharmacy technologies to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
• Participate in team meetings and interdisciplinary discussions.
• Maintain proficiency in pharmacy practice through ongoing education.
• Demonstrate cultural competence and developmental sensitivity in patient care.
• Retail Pharmacy: Insurance verification, prior authorizations, and third-party issues.
• Process manual prescriptions (EZ-DME, Worker’s Compensation, breast pumps).
• Handle cash register transactions and customer service.
• Support scheduling, pharmacy software, and bookkeeping activities.
• Hospital Pharmacy: Deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas.
• Support inpatient workflows, including sterile compounding.
• Participate in multidisciplinary care discussions with clinical teams.
• Greater emphasis on infusion therapies and direct patient monitoring.
• Progression of Duties: Student pharmacists advance through years.
