Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine seeks a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician to provide histology services with strong patient care focus and excellent communication. The role requires adherence to laboratory procedures and proper QA documentation.

Responsibilities include paraffin embedding, microtomy, staining, coverslipping, IHC, and routine maintenance of equipment. Eligible NYS CLT/Histology license is required with preferred BS/AAS in related fields.

Qualifications

  • Must have NYS license as Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Histology Technician, or eligibility with HT (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Preferred: NYS CLT license; BS in biology/medical technology or life sciences, or AAS in Histotechnology; 1+ year Histology experience including special stains, IHC, microtomy.

  • Perform paraffin microtomy to cut 2–5 micron sections.
  • Stain, coverslip, and assemble cases; label and distribute prepared histology sections.
  • Follow protocols for LIS systems: Copath, Ventana Benchmark, Ultra, Symphony, Vantage and Copath.
  • Complete routine and special requests for additional levels, recuts, special stains and immunohistochemistry; verify and document in Copath.

Job description

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population and follows all laboratory procedures and protocols with interpretation of such policies as necessary to ensure proper patient care and safe work equipment. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties
  • Will paraffin and embed the following: biopsy, routine surgical specimens, placenta, autopsy and research tissue.
  • Perform paraffin microtomy techniques which include the use of the microtome to produce 2-5 micron sections.
  • Stain, coverslip and case assemble, label and distribute all prepared histology sections.
  • Follow all appropriate protocols for all LIS systems: Copath, Ventana Benchmark, Ultra, Symphony, Vantage and Copath.
  • Will complete all routine and special requests for additional levels, recuts, special stains and immunohistochemistry requests; verifying each upon completion in Copath and documenting the above for QA purposes.
  • Perform the battery of special stains and immunohistochemistry used in diagnostic histopathology.
  • Rotate responsibility for the above and perform the necessary maintenance of all laboratory instrumentation, including but not limited to the changing of instrument reagents used to process, stain, and coverslip tissue. Responsible for appropriate QA documentation with regard to maintenance and temperature logs to be performed on a daily basis.
  • As assigned assist with grossing biopsy specimens
Qualifications

Required:

  • NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist / documented eligibility including provisional/limited permit eligibility with demonstrated relevant experience or NYS License as a Histology Technician. Good interpersonal and communication skills are considered essential for this position. HT (ASCP) or eligible. Experience in renal, nerve, muscle specimens and biopsy grossing.

Preferred:

  • NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. BS degree in biology, medical technology, or other life sciences, or an AAS degree from an accredited program in Histotechnology. Minimum one year Histology clinical laboratory experience, to include: Special stains, Immunohistochemistry staining and Microtomy. Bachelor's degree in medical technology, biology, or other life science.
Posting Overview

  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Anticipated Pay Range

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $96,406 - $122,265 Base

  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($4000)
  • Night shift differential ($15,000), evening shift differential ($10,000)
  • Inconvenience pay/supplemental shift differential. ($575)
