Qualifications

• New York license or limited permit required; provisional permit within 3 months; cannot release patient reports until then.
• Experience with laboratory information systems and diverse automated equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency tests on blood, serum, spinal fluid, and body fluids using automated and manual equipment.
• Review data prior to release.
• Report panic, abnormal values and other critical results.
• Maintain quality control data, resolve QC failures and document actions.
• Prepare reagents, take inventory, and advise supervisor as required.
• Maintain records and maintenance logs for equipment.
• Assist with telephone calls and order entry in the LIS system.
• May lead a laboratory unit and train new employees.
• Maintain clean work area per Infection Control guidelines.
• Perform other lab-related tasks under supervision.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, medical technology preferred

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites.
The Blood Bank Clinical Lab Technologist will perform routine and emergency tests on blood and other body fluids using a variety of automated and manual instrumentation in a timely manner. Maintain equipment and records according to department procedures and regulatory agencies guidelines in the areas of QA and QC. Use independent judgment to solve technical and procedural problems. In some instances, ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency tests on blood, serum, spinal fluid and other body fluids using automated and manual equipment, depending on procedure. Monitor specimens to ensure work is completed.
• Review data prior to release.
• Report all panic, abnormal, etc. values.
• Maintain quality control data on tests performed, resolve QC failures and document actions as stipulated by laboratory procedures.
• Prepare reagents and take inventory, and advise supervisor as required.
• Maintain all records of work performed and keep maintenance logs of equipment.
• Assist with answering the telephone and perform order entry in the LIS system, as necessary.
• May have individual responsibility for the work of a laboratory unit and may provide leadership for technicians.
• Assist with the training of new employees.
• Maintain clean work area in accordance with Infection Control guidelines.
• Perform other laboratory-related tasks under the direction of a supervisor as needed.

Requirements

• Position requires at least a Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, medical technology preferred.
• New York State Department Laboratory Technologist License or a limited permit are required. Applicants must obtain the provisional permit within the probationary period of three months for continued employment. Prior to obtaining the provisional permit, associates may not release any patient reports.
• Laboratory and hospital information system computers, variety of automated equipment and other laboratory equipment is required.

This position is located at the Moses campus in the Blood Bank Lab. The hours are 12:00am - 8:00am with alternate weekends.
