A NYS CLT license is required, with 1 year of experience and familiarity with LIS systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in physical science (medical technology preferred).
• New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or limited permit required.
• At least 1 year of lab technologist experience; 2–3 years preferred.
• Experience with laboratory information systems and a variety of automated equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency tests on body fluids using automated and manual equipment.
• Review data prior to release and report abnormal values.
• Maintain QC data and resolve failures per procedures.
• Assist with training and potentially lead technicians within a unit.
• Maintain clean work area per infection control guidelines.
• Participate in LIS data entry and general lab tasks as needed.

Overview

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites.

Clinical Microbiology services for the diagnosis of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases are centered at the Moses site. The Clinical Lab Technologist will perform routine and emergency tests on blood and other body fluids using a variety of automated and manual instrumentation in a timely manner. Maintain equipment and records according to department procedures and regulatory agencies guidelines in the areas of QA and QC. Use independent judgment to solve technical and procedural problems. In some instances, ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency tests on blood, serum, spinal fluid and other body fluids using automated and manual equipment, depending on procedure. Monitor specimens to ensure work is completed.
• Review data prior to release.
• Report all panic, abnormal, etc. values.
• Maintain quality control data on tests performed, resolve QC failures and document actions as stipulated by laboratory procedures.
• Prepare reagents and take inventory, and advise supervisor as required.
• Maintain all records of work performed and keep maintenance logs of equipment.
• Assist with answering the telephone and perform order entry in the LIS system, as necessary.
• May have individual responsibility for the work of a laboratory unit and may provide leadership for technicians.
• Assist with the training of new employees.
• Maintain clean work area in accordance with Infection Control guidelines.
• Perform other laboratory related tasks under the direction of a supervisor as needed.

Requirements

• Position requires at least a Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, medical technology preferred.
• New York State Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or a limited permit are required.
• At least 1 year of Lab Technologist experience required; 2 – 3 years preferred.
• Laboratory and hospital information system computers, variety of automated equipment and other laboratory equipment is required.

This position is located at the Moses campus in the Microbiology Lab. The hours are 5:00 PM -1:30 AM with alternate weekends.
