Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our clinical laboratories. Under supervision, you will prepare and route specimens and ensure accurate data entry in the Laboratory Information System, supporting timely patient care.

Responsibilities include receiving and accessioning samples, maintaining specimen integrity, handling add-on testing, and answering inquiries. A high school diploma or GED is required, with 1 year of customer service preferred.

  • Identifies and resolves specimen integrity issues and documents all information for QA.
  • Processes add-on testing according to departmental procedures.
  • May perform waived to moderate complexity testing.
  • Answers telephones and responds to customer inquiries and requests.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Shift

Shift: Monday - Friday (4:00am - 8:00am), every other weekend

General Summary

Under direct supervision, appropriately addresses the preparation and routing of laboratory testing in any one of the various specialized laboratories throughout UMMS, following departmental procedures and regulations stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Receives and accessions patient samples into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Ensures that all codes and information are entered accurately and timely. Maintains accurate patient identification and information for billing purposes following departmental procedures.
  • Processes (centrifuges, aliquots, and performs other special handling procedures for specimens) and delivers specimens to specific laboratories as required.
  • Saves or preserves specimens as needed in refrigerator, freezer, incubator, dry ice, or other storage as appropriate.
  • Identifies and resolves specimen integrity issues such as mislabeled specimens, quantity not sufficient (QNS), specimen integrity, incorrect container type, incorrect/incomplete requisitions, etc., and documents all information for quality assurance purposes.
  • Processes add-on testing according to departmental procedures.
  • May perform waived to moderate complexity testing.
  • Answers telephones and responds to customer inquiries and requests.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience - Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
Education & Experience - Preferred
  • One (1) year of customer service experience is preferred.
