Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will follow CLIA guidelines and the CA Business and Professions Codes (bpc: 1212, 1269). Unlicensed laboratory personnel ('aides') are not permitted to read, record, result, verify, or interpret laboratory tests, perform tests involving quantitative measurements, perform mathematical calculations, instrument calibration, or review quality control results. They require direct supervision by a licensed CLS or equivalent during analytical testing phases. The role includes:

1. Performing computer entry, filing, telephone communication, and clerical duties.
2. Greeting patients and visitors politely and professionally.
3. Possessing good communication skills and understanding of laboratory test terminology.
4. Demonstrating proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection from all age groups.
5. Processing specimens across various laboratory departments and for reference labs.
6. Stocking and ordering supplies, maintaining cleanliness of storage and collection areas.
7. Handling specimens according to established policies, and with proper training, performing instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control, primary culture inoculations, slide staining, and subculturing.
8. Performing additional tasks as assigned by the department manager/director, such as monitoring, mailing, faxing, answering phones, and interdepartmental deliveries.
9. Assisting in Pathology with training and evaluation.
10. Performing runner duties.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• At least 1 year of clinical laboratory experience performing similar functions preferred.
• State certification as CPT I or CPT II if required by the state.
• Current BCLS (AHA) certification upon hire and maintained current preferred.
