The Laboratory Assistant will follow CLIA guidelines. Unlicensed laboratory personnel (“aides”) may not read, result, verify or interpret laboratory tests, perform tests involving quantitative measurement, mathematical calculations, instrument calibration, or review quality control results without supervision. They require direct and constant supervision by a CLS or licensed person during analytical testing.
The Laboratory Assistant: 1) performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties; 2) demonstrates good telephone etiquette and greets patients and visitors politely; 3) possesses good communication skills; 4) understands terminology of tests ordered; 5) has knowledge of phlebotomy and specimen collection equipment; 6) processes pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens (pre-analytic phase); 7) processes specimens for reference laboratories; 8) stocks and orders supplies; 9) maintains cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas; 10) processes or prepares specimens on laboratory instruments per policies; 11) with proper training, performs instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control, primary culture inoculations, slide staining, and subcultures; 12) may be assigned additional tasks by the department manager/director, such as monitoring, mailing, faxing, answering phones, and interdepartmental deliveries; 13) assists in Pathology with training and evaluation; 14) acts as a Runner; 15) assists in transcribing post-analytic results.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. HS Diploma or Equivalent required.
2. Minimum 1-year clinical laboratory experience performing similar functions preferred.
3. State Certified as CPT I or CPT II if required by the state.
4. Current BLS certification upon hire and maintained preferred.
