Job Description

Be a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Clinical Lab Associate 4 in the Laboratory Service Center department. In this role you will work in partnership with laboratory team members, other departments, patient care services, and hospital departments. The Laboratory Service Center is available for urgent or standard result times. We can analyze specimens at the cellular, chemical, endocrinological or immunologic levels. Through numerous lab specialties and processes, we offer an expansive array of tests performed by experienced laboratory professionals to provide insights on your health. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity and you must be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Under the leadership of the Director of Laboratory Services and Laboratory Supervisors, you will perform assigned supportive work in the delivery of patient care, involving multiple office, clerical and technical duties. You will interact, intervene, and problem‑solve to ensure exceptional customer service by greeting patients, responding to telephone inquiries and faxes, and distributing test results. You will process human specimens for delivery to laboratory departments for testing, perform a limited number of technical procedures for which training has been given and competency demonstrated, and perform blood specimen collection within compliance of Federal Regulatory Guidelines. You will demonstrate necessary skills and knowledge through competencies for specific skills appropriate to the age of patients served as delineated by competency tools. You will perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions
  • Delivers samples to appropriate departments within acceptable time limits.
  • Monitors for completion of STAT out‑patient tests and promptly notifies referring physician or agency.
  • Ensures timely registration of specimens and handling of special accounts.
  • Ensures timeliness in relay of patient results by investigating delays and monitoring completion of specimen collection and results.
  • Performs all venipunctures and specimen collections following policies and procedures of the Department of Laboratory Services at satellites of the laboratory and/or at client offices while providing excellent customer service.
  • Handles specimens upon receipt in the lab following the policies and procedures of the Department of Laboratory Services.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to outside reference laboratories in accordance with requirements specified for each referral laboratory.
  • Ensures outpatients receive excellent customer service when presenting at the laboratory for specimen collection and ensures proper registration and ordering of tests.
  • Performs registration of patients into the patient financial system or LIS system according to procedure to ensure correct billing and enters physician‑ordered tests into LIS.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have completed high school or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy course or program.
  • Must have equivalent of 6‑month full‑time employment involving phlebotomy and/or laboratory, medical or clerical experience with emphasis on customer service.
  • Performance of phlebotomy and/or cardiology skills valid as assessed by competency tools with a minimum pass rate of 80 percent is mandatory.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and basic computer skills are essential.
  • Effective interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families and co‑workers.
  • Ability to function effectively in an extended team environment.
  • Ability to resolve conflict effectively.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, time‑critical department.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of accredited phlebotomy program or certification by:
    • ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists)
    • AMT (American Medical Technologist)
    • NCCLS (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards)
    • NPA (National Phlebotomy Association)
    • ASCLS (American Society for Clinical Laboratory Scientists)
    • NCA (National Certifying Agency)
    • NHA (National Healthcare Association)

Additional Information

In this role you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. Your schedule will consist of one 8‑hour day shift, with a start time ranging between 11:00 am–2:00 pm, and will not include on‑call shifts. The position is 100% onsite at the Ingalls campus. Weeks may include occasional weekend work (Saturday and/or Sunday).

The pay range is based on a full‑time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.
