Essential Functions

Manage the receipt and storage of surgical pathology cases, including:

1. Receiving and accessioning surgical pathology specimens.
2. Entering orders into the LIS system (PowerPath) with accuracy.
3. Contributing to monthly Quality Assurance activities for the department.
4. Matching and labeling specimen containers with requisitions for surgical numbers.
5. Correlating cassettes with surgical numbers accurately.
6. Maintaining specimen deficiencies in LIS (PowerPath).

Additional duties & Responsibilities

1. Perform assigned duties accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner; seek additional assignments when tasks are completed.
2. Respond to telephone inquiries regarding specimen issues, troubleshooting, etc.
3. Contact physicians’ offices or nursing staff for additional information on incomplete requisitions.
4. Complete paperwork related to Quality Assurance.
5. Maintain temperature charts in accessioning and gross room areas.
6. Monitor and restock supplies such as gloves and cassettes.
7. Store completed surgical specimens according to department policy.
8. Dispose of surgical specimens following department procedures.
9. Handle formaldehyde waste appropriately.
10. Perform other tasks as assigned by management.

Working Conditions

• Lifting a minimum of 10-20 pounds.
• Exposure to preservative chemicals.

Qualifications

Required:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

• Experience in laboratories, physician offices, or clinics.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Experience with healthcare patient registration.
