Job summary

Stony Brook University Hospital seeks an IBCLC Lactation Consultant to influence lactation care as an educator and consultant within the nursing staff. The role acts as a resource to breastfeeding mothers and babies, collaborating with physicians and the health team to manage lactation needs.

Required: Bachelor's degree, IBCLC certification, RN licensure, and BLS, plus at least two years of lactation consultant nursing experience. The position includes evening shifts and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • IBCLC certification required; Registered Professional Nurse (RN).
  • Minimum of two years of lactation consultant nursing experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the Clinical Competencies for the Practice of an IBCLC.
  • Functions as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team and consults with physicians and others to serve as a direct resource to breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • Works as a Lactation Consultant, collaborating with the mother, the primary nurse, physician and health team in lactation management.
  • Integrates knowledge and evidence-based practice to assess and plan lactation care.
  • Assists the primary nurse to formulate a nursing care plan for establishment of lactation and breastfeeding.
  • Collaborates with all health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate lactation problems and treatment outcomes.
  • Develops, evaluates and revises policies related to lactation and breastfeeding.
  • Monitors hospital practices for lactation and breastfeeding.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement for regulatory compliance and patient satisfaction.
  • Collaborates with OB/Ped leadership in program development.
  • Designs and implements educational programs for families and the community about breastfeeding and human lactation.
  • Re-evaluates needs with leadership for program growth.
  • Maintains discharge support resources and documents patient education in medical records.
  • Follows up with lactating moms within all areas of Stony Brook Hospital.
