Responsibilities
The Clinical Dietitian II assesses the nutritional status of patients using recognized assessment tools, and recommends and counsels patients, families, and caregivers on appropriate nutrition plans to improve disease or condition management. This role supports, models, and trains Clinical Dietitian I's in core behaviors and responsibilities. The position also involves managing resources cost-effectively and participating in compliance and quality improvement efforts to ensure safe and effective nutrition care. Additionally, the Clinical Dietitian II assists the Clinical Nutrition Director in coordinating clinical nutrition services.
Essential Key Responsibilities
- Conducts patient screening following specialized clinical guidelines for nutritional risk, performing assessments using age, gender, cultural, religious, and ethnic considerations, and validated tools, leading to nutrition-related diagnoses when indicated. Collaborates within an interdisciplinary team to facilitate care and identify patients at nutritional risk or requiring higher levels of care.
- Implements targeted nutrition interventions based on medical conditions, providing customized education to patients and families. Participates as a team member in delivering comprehensive patient care, monitoring and evaluating nutrition status, updating care plans, and following up as needed.
- Develops individualized intervention plans, including feeding routes and nutrition prescriptions, in accordance with physician orders. Monitors patient responses and documents progress in medical records. For California patients, coordinates nutrition services with California Children's Services (CCS) if applicable.
- Collaborates with Food and Nutrition Services to enhance patient experience, including participating in menu reviews, tray audits, and ensuring diet order accuracy. Supports training and development of staff and peers, including leading nutrition therapy workshops for hospital staff.
- Provides expert-level care for high-acuity patients, including those in neonatal intensive care, pediatric units, and those requiring enteral/parenteral nutrition, with order writing privileges in applicable settings.
- Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited dietetics program (ACEND).
At least three (3) years of experience in acute care hospital settings or similar, working with complex patient populations.
State Licensure within 3 months of hire.
