Position Overview

This position works with the medical team to provide optimal medical nutrition therapy to all patients including infants, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics. Works with other members of the department to improve food service and quality care to patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  1. Registration with the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
  2. Licensure through the West Virginia Board of Licensed Dietitians, or applicable state licensure where services will be performed.
  3. State criminal background check, and federal, if applicable, as required for state department of health (e.g., PA DOH, OH DOH, MD DOH, WV DHHR) regulated areas based on physical work location.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  1. One year of clinical experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following are general responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:

  1. Provide comprehensive high-quality medical nutrition therapy to patients.
  2. Complete physician-ordered consults and instructions according to standards of care and document in medical records; communicate concerns or recommendations to physicians.
  3. Document NPO/Clear Liquid notes by day five; follow-up until nutrition is provided unless contraindicated.
  4. Complete and document calorie counts accurately; provide summaries within 24 hours if results warrant recommendations.
  5. Calculate and report nitrogen balance and metabolic cart studies timely and accurately.
  6. Conduct nutrition assessments on high-risk patients, including diet appropriateness, tube feeding, lab values, drug-nutrient interactions, and develop care plans.
  7. Utilize order writing privileges with physician co-signature as approved, within scope of practice.
  8. Ensure competency and maintain registration and licensure; participate in annual performance appraisals.
  9. Follow up on assessments and consults; attend relevant meetings and conferences.
  10. Supervise nutritional therapy support team activities, document errors or harmful interactions, and participate in disciplinary actions if needed.
  11. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other staff to optimize nutritional care, including diet modifications and medication timing.
  12. Address patient food complaints and coordinate food quality improvements.
  13. Update clinical rotation assignments, develop and teach educational classes, and oversee intern activities.
  14. Develop and deliver in-services and lectures for healthcare personnel, students, and community groups.
Physical and Work Environment

Must be able to perform frequent walking, sitting, and standing. Work is primarily in patient care units, with some office and community speaking engagements.

  4. Availability to work on Saturdays, some holidays, and attend evening meetings occasionally.
