Job summary

Allegheny Health Network is seeking a Cytogenetics professional to independently culture and analyze a wide variety of specimens, including blood, bone marrow, and tissue, to support diagnosis and management of genetic diseases.

The role involves meticulous slide analysis, karyotyping, and quality control, with ongoing education and adherence to HIPAA and privacy policies. Strong collaboration with senior staff is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in ASCP eligible program.
• Experience in Cytogenetics.
• Preferred: Experience in tissue culture, FISH, and analysis of all tissue types.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes cells by meticulously scanning slides and evaluating chromosome spreads, using the automated metaphase finder for aberrations and flagging abnormalities to the Senior Tech.
• Harvests cells and prepares slides, adjusting techniques for variability, stains with banding methods, and monitors quality for adjustments.
• Captures and karyotypes cells on the metaphase finder computer.
• Performs quality control on new reagents and lot numbers and keeps records.
• Organizes transportation of specimens, reviews paperwork for completeness, contacts physicians for information, completes billing, and responds to inquiries.
• Keeps current with cytogenetic principles and developments through journals and meetings, integrating new techniques when applicable.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
