PRINCIPAL MISSION:
Under the supervision of the Department and in collaboration with a physician, the nurse practitioner provides comprehensive health care, including primary care, health and mental health screening, and disease prevention. Supervision, consultation, and training may be provided to nursing, counseling, and other healthcare professionals.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote a safe, cooperative, and professional healthcare environment to ensure optimal patient care.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, including absenteeism, ETIME, cellular phone usage, dress code, and conduct.
- Prioritize customer service by treating patients, visitors, and co-workers professionally, exercising courtesy and tact. Communicate effectively about SBH services and ensure concerns are addressed promptly.
- Work in any division of the department as assigned.
- Participate in peer reviews and review of protocols and procedures.
- Perform diagnostic evaluations of patients.
- Order appropriate consultations and manage inpatient care.
- Engage in multidisciplinary treatment planning and efforts.
- Write complete orders for medications, observations, lab tests, diets, passes, discharges, and other orders promptly.
- Renew orders in a timely manner.
- Provide appropriate outpatient referrals.
- Document care completely and promptly, following departmental guidelines.
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations, recommend treatments or referrals, and follow up with medical and surgical patients.
- Evaluate, treat, and manage dispositions in the Emergency Department as needed.
- Participate in committee work as assigned by Department Directors and Chair.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Master of Science Degree in Nursing with an accredited Nurse Practitioner curriculum and three years of nursing experience.
- Graduation from an accredited nursing school, with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, a Master's Degree in a health-related field, certification as a Nurse Practitioner from an accredited program, and three years of nursing experience.
Credentials Required:
- Valid license to practice nursing in New York State.
- Certification as ANP, FNP, or PNP with prescriptive privileges by New York State.
- ANA certification in Adult or Family Practice preferred.
Experience/Skills Required:
- Experience treating psychiatric patients.
- Knowledge of psychiatric illnesses and treatments.
- Solid knowledge of psychopharmacology.
