**Summary:**

  • Position Summary: Codes and abstracts information from inpatient and outpatient records by careful analysis and adherence to official coding guidelines, ensuring appropriate reimbursement, compliance with regulations, and accuracy for clinical care analysis and provider profiling.
  • Qualified individuals must have the ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform the following duties:
  • Demonstrates commitment to the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Assigns codes based upon clinical coding guidelines.
  • Assigns ICD-10-CM diagnostic and procedure codes with appropriate present on admission indicators to inpatient records, based on clinical documentation. Determines appropriate MS-DRG based on diagnoses and procedure codes.
  • Assigns ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT procedure codes and modifiers to outpatient accounts.
  • Applies drug administration charges and observation hour charges to outpatient accounts based on clinical documentation and guidelines.
  • Reviews and applies modifiers to NCCI and OCE edits appropriately.
  • Abstracts required clinical and demographic data from records.
  • Participates in data quality peer review processes.
  • The following duties are secondary:
  • Assists Patient Financial Services and physicians with coding-related issues.
  • Completes daily productivity records and submits monthly.
  • Assists with inpatient case mix capture.

**Minimum Required Qualifications:**

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Formal education in ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT-4 coding, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Certification as a CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or COC through AHIMA or AAPC. If not certified, certification must be obtained within three years of employment.
  • Experience in ICD-10-CM, MS-DRG assignment, and CPT-4 coding, including student work experience.

**Preferred Qualifications:**

  • Experience with encoding software.
