Job description

Clinical Assistant Professor
WRITING
Liberal Studies
New York University Arts & Science

Liberal Studies at New York University invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor position to begin September 1, 2027, pending administrative and budgetary approval. The Liberal Studies Core is a dynamic liberal arts curriculum that provides a global and interdisciplinary foundation for nearly 100 NYU majors. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts is an innovative global studies major grounded in the spatial, conceptual, and temporal understandings of a highly interconnected world, with a program of study that is distinguished by experiential learning, study away, and independent research focused in an interdisciplinary concentration. In both the LS Core and the GLS major, small, seminar-style classes and close faculty-student interaction provide students with the benefits of a liberal arts college within a large urban research university. We are especially interested in hiring qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching, and service to the diversity and excellence of Liberal Studies and NYU. We seek applicants for the following position: WRITING PhD or MFA in Writing Studies, Creative Writing, Nonfiction Writing, Rhetoric, Journalism, Literary Studies, Translation Studies, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field. Candidates must have the ability and demonstrated experience to teach in the first-year writing sequence of the Core Curriculum with a global, interdisciplinary, and intersectional emphasis, as this will be the primary responsibility of the position. Candidates with additional specialization or secondary fields in documentary arts (such as film and/or podcasting), science/environmental writing, and/or qualitative research writing are strongly encouraged to apply. Along with a focus on first-year writing, candidates should be prepared to contribute to upper-level courses in a concentration of the Global Liberal Studies degree with a particular focus on the creative and theoretical implications of their work in a cross-cultural or otherwise global context.

Minimum qualifications: MFA by the date of appointment; three years of college-level teaching experience; and demonstrated excellence in teaching. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share Liberal Studies’ commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life in LS and NYU. Candidates must present demonstrated experience and commitment to interdisciplinarity, intersectionality, and a teaching approach informed by global perspectives. Publications and evidence of outstanding scholarship and relevant professional activity are strongly encouraged. All Liberal Studies full-time faculty hold renewable term contracts, initially three years, and later six years in duration. Faculty are eligible for promotion within the Clinical faculty ranks (Assistant, Associate, Full). Faculty normally teach three classes per semester, advise undergraduates, and contribute service to Liberal Studies and to the University. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $93,730. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Liberal Studies sees equity and inclusion and belonging as essential to education and the development of leadership in a globally interconnected world. These values inform LS as a collegial and respectful environment for students, faculty, and staff—with particular attention to improving the student experience. NYU affirms the value of differing perspectives on the world as we strive to build the strongest possible university with the widest reach.
