Job summary

Dr. Black's Eye Associates in Jeffersonville, IN is seeking an entry-level Clinical Assistant / Optometric Technician to join our eye care team. This role provides on-the-job training and no prior optometry experience is required.

As a Clinical Assistant, you will perform patient pre-testing, document medical histories, and support the Optometrist with diagnostic testing while keeping exam rooms prepared and organized.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
• No medical/optometry experience required, but highly preferred and training will be provided.
• Strong communication and computer skills; ability to learn medical software quickly.

Responsibilities

• Pre-test patients and assist with vision screening using diagnostic equipment (will be trained).
• Record patient medical histories and current medications in the EHR.
• Assist with specialized testing ordered by the Optometrist and ensure exam rooms are ready and clean.
• Manage patient flow and maintain organized clinical areas to support timely appointments.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

• Patient Pre-Testing: Guide patients through initial vision screening tests using specialized diagnostic equipment (autorefractors, retinal imaging, tonometer, etc. — we will train you on all equipment).
• Medical History: Accurately gather and record patient medical histories, main concerns, and current medications into our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
• Specialized Testing: Perform additional diagnostic testing as ordered by the Optometrist.
• Patient Flow & Care: Prepare exam rooms, sanitize equipment between patients, and keep the clinical area organized and running on schedule

What We’re Looking For (Qualifications)

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
• Experience: No medical or optometric / ophthalmic experience required but highly preferred.

Skills:

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills — comfortable working directly with patients of all ages.
• Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn new medical software quickly.
• High attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Punctual, dependable, and professional demeanor.
