Job summary

AstraZeneca seeks a Director, AI Research to lead clinical AI workflows from discovery to deployment, shaping measurable business value across trials. You will work with clinicians and engineers to translate pain points into product requirements, data contracts, and evaluation plans while delivering hands-on Python prototypes and production code.

Qualifications

• PhD in CS/ML/biomedical informatics or related quantitative discipline; or an MD, master’s degree, or equivalent experience with strong computational track record.
• 4–7 years post-PhD delivering applied AI/ML or data products, including healthcare/life sciences.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL, with version control, tests, APIs, data pipelines, and cloud/containerized environments.
• Experience building or deploying LLM-based/agentic systems, including retrieval, tool use, outputs, orchestration, and human review.
• Ability to translate ambiguous stakeholder needs into a bounded product, prototype, and delivery plan.

Responsibilities

• Own a portfolio of clinical AI workflows from discovery to deployment and measurable benefits.
• Observe clinical operations stakeholders to convert pain points into product requirements and evaluation plans.
• Build and iterate Python prototypes; contribute production code and review changes with engineers.
• Design agentic workflows combining LLMs, deterministic services, and human review with evidence provenance.
• Lead cross-functional delivery and mentor scientists/engineers toward stronger product thinking.
