Job summary

The START Center for Cancer Research in Grand Rapids, MI is hiring a Clinic Nurse to assist clinic providers with examination, evaluation, and triage of trial participants. You will follow SOPs and evidence-based standards to deliver nursing care.

Responsibilities include telephone triage, patient education on trials, EMR entry, vital signs, and coordination with staff. Required: RN license in MI, 1 year oncology experience, BLS, and proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

  • Must be a licensed RN in the practicing state (MI) and have ≥1 year oncology experience.
  • BLS certification required; familiarity with EMR and clinical workflow.
  • Strong communication and patient education skills; team-based care.

Position

We are hiring a Clinic Nurse. The Clinic Nurse is responsible for assisting the clinic providers with examination, evaluation and triage of individuals who are participants in research protocols that are conducted at START. The Clinic Nurse uses appropriate professional judgment and decision‑making in planning and providing care. Nursing care is to be delivered in a manner consistent with the Standard Operating Procedures and standards of practice, and professional evidence‑based standards.

Schedule and Location

Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. CST, 3 shifts of 10 hours, Monday–Friday.

Location: 800 Foremost Dr SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Perform telephone triage assessments of patients on trial when required.
  • Provide patient education regarding participation in a clinical trial, chemotherapy/immunotherapy/investigational agent administration and potential side effects.
  • Enter patient history into the Electronic Medical Record based on records received and the patient provided history.
  • Perform basic patient assessment including physical exam, vital signs, ECG’s and other patient assessments as needed.
  • Use nursing assessment skills to observe participant’s general well‑being. Document and take appropriate action as indicated.
  • Provide patients with visit arrangements.
  • Ensure that the dignity, health, safety, and welfare of participants are given the highest priority at all times.
  • Coordinate patient care with internal and external staff.
  • Respond to emergency situations based upon nursing standards.
  • Provide coverage for Infusion Nurse as directed by management.
Planning and Problem‑Solving Tasks
  • Prepare for clinic day ensuring necessary supplies/results are available.
  • Assist with prescription refills.
  • Assist with entry and completion of quality standards for EHR/PQRS.
Communicating Tasks
  • Provide telephone support.
  • Assist with the training and mentorship of less tenured staff.
  • Complete preauthorization forms for medications.
  • Assist in the referral process to appropriate services.
  • Communicate and interact with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and staff morale. Interact effectively with patients/family members and demonstrate sensitivity in regards to cultural diversity, age‑specific needs and confidentiality.
Protocol Management Tasks
  • Work with the physician to ensure that necessary labs and assessments are performed and results are reviewed.
  • Work with the physician to ensure that orders are placed and monitored.
Technical and Quality Tasks
  • Working knowledge of a variety of health care technologies and equipment.
  • Serve as a team member by expanding his/her responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.
  • Time management and organizational skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Other duties may be assigned at any time as required.
Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the practicing state.
  • 1‑year oncology experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, an AHA (American Heart Association) certificate.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, including Teams, Excel, Outlook and Word.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate™ completed within the last 5 years or obtained within the first year of employment.
  • Clinical Trials experience.
