Job summary

George Mason University in Fairfax, VA is hiring a Clinic Nurse in University Life to support healthcare providers by delivering ambulatory nursing care, triage, immunizations, wound care, and medication administration in the SHS clinic.

The Nurse will ensure safe patient flow, participate in quality improvement, and collaborate with physicians and staff. Requires RN license, BLS, and 2+ years ambulatory care. On-site role with occasional evenings/weekends.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in nursing or equivalent required.

• BLS for Healthcare Provider Certification.

• Ability to apply nursing process including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementing, evaluating.

About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax Campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech Campuses (Prince William).

About the Position:

The Clinic Nurse’s primary purpose is to support healthcare providers by delivering essential ambulatory nursing care while ensuring safe, efficient patient flow throughout the clinic. This includes providing direct clinical services—such as triage, immunizations, allergy treatments, wound care, and medication administration—and supporting preventive health initiatives like mass flu clinics. Additionally, the Clinic Nurse contributes to quality and safety efforts through participation in peer review, continuous quality improvement, risk management, and policy development, helping maintain high standards of student-centered care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Skills

• Complete annual competency review requirements;
• Maintain procedural and lab competencies;
• Deliver safe, efficient, and orderly flow of patients through the clinic;
• Accurately utilize the EMR and Nurse Order Monitor for documentation and clinic flow monitoring; and
• Perform phlebotomy and CLIA waived testing.

Triage

• Deliver safe and effective triage to students arriving at or calling the clinic for acute appointments;
• Utilize approved protocols for triage and comply with documentation requirements as stated in the Triage Policy and Procedure; and
• Manage patients per clinic policies and protocols to include ordering tests in collaboration with providers.

Nursing Interventions

• Accurately and safely administer immunizations and allergy immunotherapy;
• Verify, transcribe, and upload external immunization records;
• Provide patient education for self-injection therapy and other necessary topics; and
• Participate in nurse-led STI clinics.

Training and Mentorship

• Participate as a preceptor for BSN students as assigned;
• Provide input and offer support as a mentor to future George Mason University Nurse graduates; and
• Participate as a nurse preceptor to new hires.

Departmental/Divisional Duties

• Serve on and contribute to one of the clinic committees that meet quarterly;
• Support divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned;
• Actively participate in UL divisional meetings, initiatives, and in-person events to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities, and to foster a cross-unit collaboration;
• Participate in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement;
• Stay informed about best practices, research, and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure SHS remains innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of the student body; and
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Must be a graduate of an accredited diploma, Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in nursing program from an institute of higher education;
• Valid Virginia or multi-state RN license at time of hire;
• BLS for Healthcare Provider Certification;
• Experience typically obtained in 2+ years as an RN in a healthcare setting;
• Experience working in an ambulatory or acute care setting;
• Knowledge of adult ambulatory care practices;
• Knowledge of the unique needs of college students;
• Knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements;
• Knowledge of Electronic Health Records;
• Ability to apply the elements of the Nursing process including assessment, developing nursing diagnosis, planning, implementing nursing interventions, and evaluating the nursing plan of care;
• Ability to perform treatments and procedures ordered by a healthcare provider;
• Ability to engage and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare providers;
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends; and
• Proficiency in all aspects of required clinical procedures and treatments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in related fieldor equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Experience typically obtained in 2+ years working in an ambulatory or acute care setting;
• Knowledge of administering EKGs and nebulizer treatments;
• Knowledge of allergy immunotherapy;
• Ability to perform phlebotomy and IV initiation and monitoring; and
• Ability to apply triage skills.
