Job summary

George Mason University, located in Fairfax, VA, is seeking a Clinical Medical Assistant to join University Life - Student Health Services. The role involves preparing patients, administering treatments, performing diagnostic tests, and assisting clinical leadership.

The successful candidate will have a Medical Assistant certification or equivalent outpatient experience, be proficient with EMR systems, and able to perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and immunizations.

Responsibilities

• Record patient intake including vital signs, allergies, and medications.
• Perform procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid.
• Assist providers during procedures and chaperone sensitive exams.
• Follow OSHA safety practices, including handling of biohazard materials.
• Maintain a safe environment for staff and patients by proper sterilization of instruments and cleaning and stocking supplies.
• Maintain competency and knowledge in all skills by participation in orientation, ongoing training, annual infection control training, and competency review.
• Safely operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
• Performs CLIA waived testing.
• Accurately documents laboratory test results.
• Properly stores and handles hazardous materials, cleaning agents, and potentially infectious materials.
• Upon completion of lab orientation, maintains competency in all laboratory procedures.
• Safely and accurately administers immunizations.
• Participates in annual safe injection practices training and maintains knowledge through ongoing training.
• Follows evidence-based public health guidelines for vaccine recommendations and informs patients regarding required and administered vaccines.
• Participates as a member of an SHS committee, attending quarterly meetings, following through on assignments, and contributing to the maintenance of high-quality healthcare.
• Supports divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned, acting as a technical resource and SME as required.
• Supports UL divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned, acting as a technical resource and SME as required.
• Actively participates in UL divisional meetings, initiatives, and in-person events to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities, and to foster a cross-unit collaboration.
• Participates in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement.
• Stays informed about best practices, research, and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure SHS remains innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of the student body; and
• Performs other duties as assigned.

About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including, but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech campuses (Prince William).

About the Position:

The Clinical Medical Assistant works independently with other healthcare professionals to provide high quality health care in a clinic setting. The Medical Assistant utilizes clinical and laboratory skills in preparing patients for provider visits, administering prescribed treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and carrying out other duties as requested by clinical leadership.

• Ability to manage patient load and the needs of the providers, gained through experience in an outpatient setting; and
• Ability to inform patients about immunizations and administer vaccines.
