About the Job

Overview:
Are you a passionate veterinarian with clinical experience who is eager to give back to the profession by shaping the next generation of veterinary professionals? The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Clinic Director/Lead Veterinarian for our new teaching-focused small animal clinic, generously funded by a philanthropic gift. This clinic will be based on the Spectrum of Care approach, which involves training veterinary students to deliver high-quality, individualized care to clients who may have limited financial resources. This is a full-time (100% appointment) faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (contract). The salary and rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

In this pivotal role, you will develop and lead a dynamic team to design and oversee clinic operations. As Clinic Director, you will be instrumental in producing practice-ready veterinarians who possess a wide range of diagnostic techniques, clinical procedures, and post-visit care protocols that enable effective and profitable treatment while fostering compassionate communication about care options. Your leadership will ensure that students not only gain hands-on clinical experiences in a fast-paced environment, but also develop the ability to deliver a range of care options that meet the needs of diverse client populations.

At the University of Minnesota, we pride ourselves on our commitment to education, patient care, and the growth of our veterinary community. If you're a clinical leader who is ready to mentor, teach, and influence the future of veterinary medicine through a Spectrum of Care model, we'd love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:
Develop and oversee clinical operations for a small animal outpatient facility, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and student education aligned with the Spectrum of Care (SOC) philosophy.
Develop and implement SOC-aligned protocols to guide clinical decision-making while promoting cost-sensitive care options for patients.
Mentor and lead a team of veterinarians and staff, fostering a collaborative and professional environment focused on growth and continuous improvement.
Work closely with the Practice Manager to optimize clinic operations, patient care protocols, and budget models to ensure financial sustainability.
Collaborate with the SOC Curriculum Coordinator to integrate student training into daily clinic operations and ensure alignment with educational and broader curriculum goals.
Serve as the clinical lead and peer mentor for all DVMs, establishing a supportive educational environment.
Represent the clinic as the Section Head in communications with other sections within the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department and across the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN-CVM).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree.
At least 5 years of leadership and management experience in small animal clinical practice.
Eligibility for an academic veterinary license and USDA accreditation in Minnesota.
Strong track record of delivering excellent veterinary care across a spectrum of care, with a demonstrated ability to balance patient needs with financial considerations.
Experience providing medically and situationally appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic options.
Excellent interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and a client service focus.
Ability to work independently, make informed decisions, and remain open to feedback.
Proven experience developing, mentoring, and supporting a high-performing team.
Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:
5-10 years of experience in small animal clinical practice.
Board certification (e.g., ABVP) or equivalent specialized qualifications.
Experience teaching in a veterinary program or higher education setting with a positive impact on students.
Expertise in experiential learning, adult learning theory, and curriculum design.
Advanced training or experience in clinical skills development, communication, and professional development.
Content expertise in Spectrum of Care, preventive care, clinical skills, professionalism, and/or communication.
Experience in small group instruction, facilitation, or coaching.
Strong practice management skills and business acumen.
Interest in applied research focused on best practices in Spectrum of Care.
Proficiency in Google, Excel, PowerPoint, and educational learning management systems.
