Job description

Most payroll jobs are about following the process. This one is about improving it.

Paper Trails, a"Best Place to Work in Maine" winner, is a payroll, HCM and HR firm in Kennebunk serving small and mid sized businesses across Maine and New England. We are not a call center and we are not a national processor. Our clients know their consultant by name, and our consultants know their clients' businesses.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely hard to find: a person who understands payroll and compliance, who is fluent with technology, and whose instinct when they see a slow manual process is to figure out a better way and then go build it.

What you would actually do

You would own a portfolio of about 100 to 150 clients and be responsible for getting their payrolls right. That is roughly two thirds of the job.

The other third is the part that makes this role different. You would find the repetitive work in your book and eliminate it through custom imports, automated verifications, AI assisted processing, and smarter configuration of our platform. You would move clients onto self service where it makes them faster and coach them through the change. You would share what works with the rest of the team so a win for one client becomes a win for many.

You would also have real conversations with business owners and HR leaders about compliance, their workforce data, and where technology can actually solve a problem for them. That means recommending, sometimes disagreeing, and knowing when to point them somewhere else.

We run on isolved, and it is a deep platform. We will train you to master it. We are also actively building AI tooling into how we operate, and this role sits right at the intersection of the two.

Who we are looking for

You are a figure it outer. When you hit something you have never seen, you dig in rather than pass it along.

You have taught yourself software nobody trained you on. You have built something, an import, a report, a spreadsheet model, an automation, because doing it by hand was too slow. You are already experimenting with AI tools and want to go a lot further with them.

You can explain a complicated rule to someone who does not want to hear it, and hold your ground when you are right. You are comfortable changing a process that is not working, even when it is the way it has always been done.

You come from payroll, HRIS, benefits administration, implementation, or something close, where you owned client or employee outcomes. Direct isolved experience is a plus, not a requirement. Working knowledge of payroll tax, multi state payroll and wage and hour compliance matters, or the demonstrated ability to learn regulatory material quickly and apply it correctly. FPC or CPP is welcome, and we pay more for advanced certifications.

What we offer

$70,000 to $80,000 depending on experience, plus annual bonuses and profit sharing.

A four and a half day week. Monday through Thursday 8:30 to 4:00, Friday 8:30 to noon.
