Job Description

Position Title: Classified - Substitute Special Education Paraeducator

Assignment: CPS School Buildings, Grades PreK-12

Reports to: Building Principal

Hourly Pay: Starts at $16.12 + monthly incentives

Crete Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants to serve as on‑call substitute for special education paraeducators. This position is specific to substituting for special education paraeducators; however, additional classified substitute assignments may be added. This position is open until filled.

Purpose

The role of a substitute is to ensure that tasks are completed and students are supervised in the absence of the regular special education paraeducator.

Essential Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED and either an associate’s degree, two years of college, or a passing score on a state or local assessment that demonstrates ability to assist with instruction in reading, writing, and math.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background check.
  • Good overall appearance.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions, and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism.
Job Tasks
  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
  • Provide assistance to students with special needs, non‑English‑speaking students, students with physical and mental disabilities, or other students as assigned.
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role‑playing methods.
  • Organize and label materials and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their eye level and perceptual skills.
  • Distribute tests and homework assignments and collect them when they are completed.
  • Use computers, audio‑visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Carry out therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification and personal development programs, under the supervision of special education teachers, psychologists, speech‑language pathologists or other professionals.
  • Provide disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.
  • Assist in bus loading and unloading.
  • Maintain computers in classrooms and laboratories and assist students with hardware and software use.
  • Serve as a role model to all students.
  • Refrain from engaging in conduct that interferes with the operations of the District, including the education of students.
  • Adhere to all District policies, rules, regulations, and supervisory directives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information concerning staff, students, and parents in accordance with law and District rules.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics of the District and the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE Rule 27).
Other Responsibilities

Perform the work as required for the position's job tasks in the absence of the staff member.

Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Principal.
