An established industry player is seeking a dedicated Water Treatment Plant Operator to ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of its water treatment facility. Under the supervision of the Water Plant Foreman and Chief Operator, this role involves performing semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and oversight of the City's Water Intake and Treatment Plant.
This position requires competent operational oversight and management of systems and equipment used in the daily production of potable water at a Class A Lake Michigan water intake and treatment plant. Responsibilities include utilizing multiple computer applications, including SCADA, to operate water management systems, and applying reasoning skills typically gained through advanced math or science coursework. A basic understanding of electrical power for large motors, water pressure, water chemistry, and fluid formulas is beneficial. The role may also involve general maintenance tasks, water tank cleaning, housekeeping, and assisting contractors or other City employees. Housekeeping duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing floors and windows, and addressing other needs as they arise. Employees may be assigned higher-level tasks to gain experience and prepare for advancement. Basic PPE is required during duties.
Work is performed semi-independently during assigned shifts, operating controls that manage pumps and valves during water treatment, following AWWA Standards and Standard Operating Procedures to ensure optimal operation and maintenance of the water intake and treatment plant.
The incumbent must ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are available and operational at the start of each shift, including systems that regulate chemical dosage used in water treatment.
Responsibilities include collecting water samples, conducting scheduled inspection rounds to check plant security, operational status, and equipment integrity, and documenting findings in the Operator’s Log. When deficiencies are detected, immediate corrective action within the scope of authority is expected. If issues are beyond the incumbent’s capability, they must contact a senior operator for guidance.
The role requires completing assignments independently, adhering to SOPs, protocols, work rules, and regulations. Work is monitored through supervision, communication, meetings, and feedback.
Minimum Qualifications:
Proficiency with computer systems such as Microsoft Office and SCADA related to water plant operations is required.
