A basic understanding of electrical power for large motors, water pressure, water chemistry, and fluid formulas is beneficial. The role may also involve general maintenance tasks, water tank cleaning, housekeeping, and assisting contractors or other City employees. Housekeeping duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing floors and windows, and addressing other needs as they arise. Work is performed semi-independently during assigned shifts, operating controls that manage pumps and valves during water treatment, following AWWA Standards and Standard Operating Procedures to ensure optimal operation and maintenance of the water intake and treatment plant.

The incumbent must ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are available and operational at the start of each shift, including systems that regulate chemical dosage used in water treatment.

Responsibilities include collecting water samples, conducting scheduled inspection rounds to check plant security, operational status, and equipment integrity, and documenting findings in the Operator’s Log. When deficiencies are detected, immediate corrective action within the scope of authority is expected. If issues are beyond the incumbent’s capability, they must contact a senior operator for guidance.

The role requires completing assignments independently, adhering to SOPs, protocols, work rules, and regulations. Work is monitored through supervision, communication, meetings, and feedback.

  • Collect and perform basic water sample testing, accurately recording results.
  • Provide water analysis for internal or external sampling, including testing for lead, impurities, and water quality, and record results.
