Job summary

The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (OIDS) in Claremore seeks a full-time Defense Counsel to represent indigent clients in state trial courts, handling felony, misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, traffic, and wildlife cases.

Responsibilities include case management, client communication, investigations, preparing pretrial motions, negotiating pleas, and coordinating with experts to mount a zealous defense under agency policy.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate and active or eligible bar admission in Oklahoma.
• Experience in non-capital trials is desirable.
• Willingness to travel as required by the agency.

Responsibilities

• Performs case management with complete pleadings and orders.
• Communicates with clients on case aspects, plea negotiations, and post-judgment proceedings.
• Conducts independent investigations relating to guilt, innocence, and sentences.
• Collects and maintains evidence following standards and laws.
• Prepares for trial with pretrial motions and defense strategy.
• Gathers legal research and briefs for motions and appeals.
• Assists in jury selection and defense preparation.
• Maintains confidentiality and professional conduct.
